Someone explain the War of the Triple Alliance pls
president of Paraguay thinks he is the second coming of Napoleon and declares war on everything around him.
He then gets BTFO by Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, the triple alliance.
It was a huge meme, and still is.

When the war started the only country who still supported Paraguay was Colombia, and when the war ended the two countries made a friendship treaty in which every colombian citizen and every paraguayan citizen have both nationalities, so if we want to go to Paraguay to live we automatically get the citizenship, and the same is true for them.

war on paraguai began as paraguai grew a solid and independent state, the only southern american country independent of the commercial shackles that great brittain put in every country in the region. as paraguai grew ruled by the solano lopez's iron fist, they dont have sea borders, only way to the sea is by the navigable silver river in southeast region in south america. that served as a pretext to brittain put the neighbours countries against paraguai, and the regional tensions grew and the war began. paraguai's first move was to invade brazil by the mato grosso region (central west), but soon the brazilian army (mostly composed by slaves, which paraguai's media joked about) began to push into their borders, assisted by the argentinians and uruguaians. brazil's army led by the future caxias duke left a bloodtrail as we destroyed their industries and railroads and killed 69% of their population (YES, THIS IS ACCURATE) and paraguai never got back from the slaughter

Paraguay was working towards an alliance with Uruguay and some argentinian provinces. When Brazil intervened in Uruguay politics, supporting a coup, Lopez tried to send troops to help the uruguayan government and thus became face to face with Argentina as well as with Brazil
