The lingua franca thing broke in the 19th century. Afterwards there were several languages for specific fields or parts of the world and it returned to its old state in 50's.
If you were engineer other than naval(here you've had English and Dutch everywhere), you probably knew German and maybe some English(especially the newer engineering disciplines like automatics), if you were scientist you knew both as well, if you were diplomat or mathfag you've had to speak French fluently, if you were dealing with trade you spoke English...

I don't hate the anglos, a bit surprised at the tone in this thread desu.
I just find it uninteresting, bland and often ugly. I'm talking about the people, language, literature, food, architecture, philosophy, history, politics, culture, cities, national "ethos" or character. It's hard to stop.
It is today a rainy backwater with delusions of grandeur and relevance subconsciously living vicariously through its successor the US.
