Maps from that time don't include any of that. He didn't think he was on an Indonesian Island because he didn't know Indonesia existed (and certainly not Australia either!). He just considered "the Indias" to be that whole region, which he couldn't be more specific than because he lacked even basic geographical knowledge of it.
