Most are at least somewhat historical, and despite /gsg/ memes, can be fun. Although, the more recently they were released the more casual they get.
Total War: Never really played these.
Mount and blade series: Has some mods that take the setting into europe, also Napoleonic wars is top tier fun.

I eventually did. I was one of the last democracies in the world but my unemployment was shooting up and I stopped getting immigrants. So I decided I needed lebensraum and went fascist and invaded the FSA. The war was over within 5 months. I got broed and stopped afterwards, though. I'll pick that game up again.

Cossacks and American Conquest from GSC Game World (the STALKER developers). They're two of my favourite RTS games, they were among the last to use sprite graphics so they look a little simple but still very clean and neat. They've aged very well and a new Cossacks is imminent. I'm very excited.

No, vicky 2 is just poorly designed in that regard. Every pop has an affinity to join a rebel movement, but jacobins basically become the default movement that all pops will join if they have high militancy- they just have to agree with that movement's ideas more than any other movement which is easy. The error is glaringly shown because you can have all reforms and jacobins will still be a rebel group.

Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence is a great one for fans of the Sengoku era, imo. It's one of KOEI's better strategy games and it's even on PC in English!

Even though ALL OF THEM FUCKING SUFFER from the same fucking problems.
Sieges suck massive dicks.
I have hundreds of hours of playtime on Empire Total war, despite hating many things about it with a vengeance.
Star forts are not only expensive as fuck, but they are impossible to fucking defend. Also a common bug is the fact that forts never repair in the battle map.
Played a lot of Crusader Kings and Europa IV too, also Hearts of Iron 3.

Yes, but I suck at it. I don't like the objectives as much as just extending my position and helping out my allies. That's why I liked Fall of the Samurai a bit better than vanilla Shogun 2.

I haven't played very deeply, but they seem to convey the ideas they were meant to. For example, factories put artisans out of work and you have to deal with a few thousand unemployed people. Politics seems fine but democracies suddenly shifting into communist or monarchist governments are happens a lot, so who knows.

I really, really like Victoria 2's migration mechanic. It's something few other game has. I just can't help myself as a New World nation to constantly monitor my immigration and check every single POP that enters my country and their nationality, religion, occupation, militiancy, literacy, political affiliations, etc.

Yeah, medieval 2 is definitely the best, I recommend that one. Rome 1 was good but it's old, shogun 2 is pretty great but I still prefer medieval. Never let played any of the others.

I'd highly recommend The Saboteur if anyone wants to play a non-GS period game. While it has some questionable historical choices, it's one of the best pieces of media to get across the feeling of occupied Paris and has a great story and some good gameplay. A highly underrated game from before EA suffocated Pandemic.

I thought War of the Roses was quite a good one, multiplayer is nigh-dead though. It has pretty realistic armor and weapons, aside from a few joke ones like a plow and a stick. They even have the early age gonnes that were around at the time.

Reasonable abstractions. Assimilation is definitely exaggerated and racial groups aren't represented in the game, nor is assimilation affected by techs such as radio and mass media. Migration is a good mechanic but the New World nations have a massive bonus to assimilation of immigrants so you won't have real life scenarios of ethnic groups forming communities in certain areas, like Italians in New York or Scandinavians in Minnesota, etc.
There are some events that mention Luddite movements that railed against industrialization for fear of their livelihood, which is definitely the right idea. Fear of automation is by no means a 20th/21st century idea and it first found its start in 19th century Europe.

Same here. I do wish the POPs wouldn't immediately assimilate into the host country's culture though, it's too fast by default. It would be very interesting to have areas dominated by foreign cultures that assimilated slowly over time like what happened in reality.
