now that's a good question
why most modern armor assume people will only get shot in the chest and maybe head? or perhaps it's a mobility issue
>>
>>886087
Because that's where you aim.
>>
>>886094
>everyone has perfect aim and never accidentally shoots the leg
>>
>>886101
That's exactly why you aim for the torso, because it's the biggest and easiest target. It's hard to hit someone's leg, moreso if they're runninng or ducking and leg wounds are also not life-threatening while the chest and stomach is packed with vital organs.

>>884839
alright lads, let's get this shit started: left or right?
>>
>>886118
>leg wounds are also not life-threatening
Yes they absolutely are life threatening a lot of the time. Many major blood vessels there, also being incapacitated could get you fucked if you're getting shot at
>>
>>886135
Is this even a question? Right.

More fucking protection.
>>
>>886137
Getting shot in the leg is still preferable to getting shot in the chest or head.
>>
>>886144
yeah i know it's preferably but I still don't see why leg armour is completely ignored nowadays, especially given the role explosives play in combat
>>
>>886137
>Many major blood vessels there
the biggest neurovascular bundle is the femoral one, on your inner thigh. the others aren't as big as to cause deadly hemorrhage, they're "safer"

>>886148
>especially given the role explosives play in combat
there isn't much armors can do about anti personnel mines exploding at your feet if that's your idea
>>
>>886137
Major blood vessels can be crimped/plugged to slow down bleeding.

You have a HUGE chance of death with a gut shot/BTFO heart.

Ergo torso/chest cavity > extremities in terms of armor priorities.
>>
>>886148
>Implying leg armor could stop an old Russian artillery shell from blowing that bitch off
>>
>>886156
not necessarily mines exploding at your feet, more so ball bearings or other whatever from a bomb say 20 metres away flying into your legs and shredding them
>>
>>886168
At that range it will still shred your leg
Body armor is not all that it's cracked out to be

Because 90% of the time you'll be crouching behind cover or lying down when carrying out dismounted close-quarters combat so your legs aren't really exposed. Considering the kit you carry can sometimes weigh more than you anyway, you won't hear soldiers asking for more stuff to carry.

The Siberian one was based off old Steppe Nomad Armor.

The backpiece was a sheet of lamellar that...protected your whole upper back (your cuirass reached only to you lower back). Since mounted archery had shitloads of turns in which your back will be facing the enemy, it also acts as a shield for your upper body.

>The Japanese armor is hundreds of years more advanced and made with higher quality materials
I'm not too certain about that.

Both the Japanese and the Romans used bloomery iron to make their arms and armour.

I'd agree that the Japanese armour is more protective overall, but it's not so much an issue of the material itself but more about the composition.

Not quite. Again its the richfags who had the full ensemble. While for most citizenry you can into hoplite at the very basic level by having

A helmet
The Shield (Important)
Spear
And a greave on the leg on the side where you hold your shield.
>>
>>891421
But how does it help the puffer fish people?
>>
>>891678
There was never just one leg with a greave it was always two. There is no depiction of this on any art, literary sources, and everything I've seen in our museums have had both greaves.
Around the 700s is when the archaic hoplite came into use. You see they were required to have a heavier wooden shield and a longer 8 foot spear.. If they had a full panopoly then they would have had cuirass, helmet and greaves. That is the basis for the heavy infantry dude.
>>
>>891713
>Art.
Always love to idealize peeps.

But anyway: that one greave thing did occur among infantrymen during the Medieval Ages. Cunts with better armor.
>>
>>891733
Well its pretty much the best basis to go off of, though yes not the most accurate. It might have gone on in the Medieval Ages, nothing shows that for hoplites though. Although yes mostly the wealthy had the full coverage.
>>
>>891603
He's not asking who among the greeks had it but why the greeks were the only ones to have them

>>891733

even if they were longer you could still run and it didn't make it that much heavier. It would just make sense to cover that area.
>>
>>892182
It's bronze so heavy
And a marching army that carries its own armour and weapons is going to be slow - 10 miles a day would be good especially with all that mountainous terrain
Add to that it takes strength and effort away from the pushing that is the heart of the phalanx
You might as well ask why the Romans didn't bother with that shit either and just had dangly leather bits
When you get smaller shields you start getting mail shirts that reach that far - usually in conjunction with the rise of cavalry
>>
>>892245
bruh this stuff aint bronze? The armor was leather or quilted linen. If they could put scales on it then the extra weight from material wouldn't be too much for them. It just doesn't make sense

I have no idea what you mean by that.

Fact is that the Grand Bascinet was abandoned in the first half of the 15th century as a common battlefield helmet in favour of Sallets and Armets as well as variants such as the Barbute.

Grand bascinets were quite heavy and immobile helmets, it shouldn't come as a surprise that many preferred something lighter, especially if they were to be fighting as infantry where you need to look around all the time.

>They aren't light, much less mobile.
You're unironically trying to tell me that the helmet in >>893418 or the helmet variants you've posted are less mobile than >>893406 or even >>893264? Take a look at these things and compare them to what you see in this picture.

The close helmet (which only became widespread in the first half of the 16th century) is a far more advanced type of helmet since it is essentially a combination of various armour parts that can all be individually moved. You can actually look around in these helmets and freely move your head, which when wearing a grand bascinet is not easily possible since the only movable part is the visor.

The development went from the static, immobile grand bascinet to more mobile helmet variants such as the Sallet or the Armet, which had yet to be reinforced by additional armour parts, such as bevors, gorgets, etc. - which have all been combined into one part of armour in the close helmet. The type of helmet you see in >>893418.

Napoleon-era Cuirassier armor, stylish as fuck.
>>
>>892172
Stone armor was an offing to the souls of slain soldiers armor for living chinese soldiers in the period was bronze or leather.
>>
Why is it always a katana that most people go for as a sword decoration?

THE "GORGON" WAS BOTH, THE BEING THAT WAS DEPICTED, AND THE FIGURE ITSELF, NOT THE PERSON WEARING THE FIGURE, MORON.

everyone saying it would cut through steel if you just had the right stance. all bullshit
>>
>>898083
That's not a very good way to judge a sword... no sword can cut through metal armour, so they're all crap by that metric.

I'm no katana lover btw... I think they're an inferior weapon design albeit with interesting metallurgy and craftsmanship.
>>
>>898139
>interesting metallurgy and craftsmanship
Can you briefly explain?

Its not that I haven't heard it before, I just can't remember it well.
>>
>>898083
Swords don't cut through armor, you always target gaps in the armor, or pierce it if its weak enough.
>>
>>898187
well... it's a big subject...

You can look up differential heat treatment and kasumi/san mai construction for starters.

Iron ores were rare and often of low quality on the island of Japan, so they had to use all kinds of fancy bladesmithing techniques to compensate. Versus Europe where high quality steel was abundant.

Blame 19th Century Orientalists, weeabs, and the 80's.

Led to a huge market for Weeabswords.

So big that most of them are made in China nowadays since Nips can't be assed to mass produce a revered cultural item while the Chinks don't care due to the fact that it's not their sword + they're going to get the disposable income of clammy white weeabs.

Even if the blade isn't going to enter their flesh a bladed weapon still has a big hunk of metal on it. If you donk them on the head with it it's going to make them a bit dizzy at the least.

Get your mates to tackle them and slide a blade into a chink in their armor.

Use a mace
>>
>>904141
Haven't you mates ever heard of armored combat? Even if you have ful plate armor someone could still stab you in your joints. There are plenty of places to stab an armored foe, the only problem is knowing how to get to them.

Combat between fully armoured knights was more like wrestling or grappling than anything. You would use the longsword like a giant crowbar with half-swording techniques. Once you have them pinned on the ground, that's when you pull out your rondel (which can punch through mail) and seek out weak points or gaps in his armour like armpits and eye slits to stab him to death.

That or simply use the pollaxe... which is basically a pure anti-plate weapon for knightly combat on foot.

Yes, full helmets would have been experimented with in the early days of iron working and discarded when it was realized that the added protection came at the expense of sensory deprivation. It was more useful for soldiers to be able to hear their commander's orders and see their comrades in their peripheral vision than it was to protect those areas.

Full helmets only came after smiths developed more sophisticated metal working techniques which allowed them to develop more protective helmets with moving parts that weren't such a sacrifice to the wearer's senses.
