Too reliant on hierarchical control, ignorant of the restrictions that it places on information flow. That works fine for coordinating relatively simple activities but when war drove complexity up, their system could not take the heat. Neither would they have been able to deliver a high standard of living to their people if they had survived into the late 20th century. Authoritarianism goes straight into the trash.
