Why is Japanese military so aesthetic?

From the medieval period all the way up into the modern era.

Have they discovered how to make soldiers look cool and have aesthetically pleasing wear?

Nationalism probably has a lot to do with it. Whenever you get a country that gets really REALLY nationalist and prideful of themselves you'll notice that their uniforms get to the point of looking very aesthetic and charming. Especially Officer uniforms which is what Samurai are.

Japanese nationalism didn't exist for most of Japan's history. The Emperor wasn't revered as divine for a very long time
>>
>>857945
Japanese nationalism was impossible not to have. They were an island of xenophobics.
>>

OK, you don't know what nationalism is. I'm sorry, I'll leave this thread now.

>Nationalism is a shared group feeling in the significance of a geographical and sometimes demographic region seeking independence for its culture and/or ethnicity that holds that group together.

Sure man whatever

Didn't they imitate the "Son of Heaven" line from the Chinese the very second they learned to write, i.e. when Japan's history began?

hire a samurai~
>>

That they did, hell, the Japanese hated each other, but not nearly as much as they hated everyone else. You could even argue that their hatred brought them together.

Japanese are good at art
They had tradition that appreciated arts. They're incredibly cultured people since fuck knows and it shows in their history.

Tenno =/= emperor

Japanese borrowed many words and concept from Chinese.

China didn't have a word for emperor until the Qin dynasty when Qin Shi Huang literally invented the word. And emperor in Chinese is 皇帝 which means something like 'supreme sage king', equivalent to the concept 'king of kings'.

Japan didn't have any concept like this prior to contact with China which happened in the late eastern Han dynasty, early Three Kingdoms period. And the Japanese word for Tenno is taken from the Chinese words "heaven" and "supreme sovereign".

It can be argued to mean emperor. However Japan was not an empire until the Meiji restoration.

So pre-Meiji Tennos are arguably more like kings with divine blood, since Japanese people believed the Tenno was descended from the sun goddess Amaterasu. Tennos often took on a more religious role than administrative and military role which equates to how the western papacy operated.

The earliest samurai were law-class nobles who has official rank by Imperial court.

When they went to local regions, many central culture spread to local regions.

Their descendants and followers kept it, and It gave birth to many of the new culture.

No it doesn't because it's true. The codified worship of the Emperor in the form of state Shinto was an innovation that came about in the modern era.

Yeah, codified, state shinto.

Unofficially the Tenno has been seen as a divine being ever since the semi-mythical Jimmy

in early samurai times, rewards were based on personal valor. Samurai submitted reports of their deeds to the shogun for reward. These records were expected to be verified with witnesses.

Therefore being easily identified was very important to high ranking bushi

I always assumed the translation to emperor was something that grasped vaguely at the concept of the office while also being readily understood by Western readers.

1) Samurai were aristocracy. Aristocrats like nice things. Chinese soldiers are military class. Very practical people
2) What do you mean they aren't pimped up? Pic related. Once you reach Generalhood in the Chinese military you can be as pimped as you want and wear armor made by a master smith as opposed to mass-prod state armory shit. You're de facto aristo now.
