Why did Spain lose its Empire?
>>
Price of silver dropped due to supply and demand and they sort of all inned it. They should have all inned infrastrcture and other assets with the silver, but even then theyd be exposed to a paradigim shift.

Criollo elites wanted to rule and make business
Population didnĀ“t give a fuck for a king on the other side of the ocean

This, combined with terrible fiscal mismanagement, policies that alienated the periphery in favor of the metropole, and failure to tamp down on national identities in the late 18th century.

Basically that, and the fact that Spain gave the native inhabitants guns. Also the Spanish really didn't promote sciences as much as the English did, which meant that the English updated their technology faster and were in a favorable position during the Industrial empire. Basically Spain during the period between 1600-1900 was all like "muh Empire" and did nothing significant.

They blew all their fuckin money on spices, silks, and wars for the Hapsburgs and the Vatican. To pay off their debts they worked their colonies harder, breeding death and resentment. They drove out their money lenders (the Jews) and had no idea how to manage an economy. They created a culture that treated government office as akin to a title of nobility; endowing the holder with the right to squeeze money out of everyone they interacted with, and they made this the only socially acceptable means of individual economic advancement. Their kings were inbred, ill-tempered, and obedient to foreign royal families but held tremendous authority and couldn't be easily removed due to dynastic politics. This eventually prevented Spain from exercising political independence and turned them into a pawn that other nations sought to control.

Spain did nothing right, their brief moment of greatness only came about through the initiative of the conquistadors, but they threw it all away within a century due to sheer incompetence.

Same reason England kept losing its empires.

They refused to enfranchise the Colonials.

I remember reading somewhere that when the Spaniards found all the silver in America, rather than bringing it slowly into Europe they just brought it en masse, which fucked over the whole silver is scarce and supply and demand and the profit that Spain could have accumulated was thrown out the window because the price of silver dropped like crazy.

Fernando VII did everything wrong

They let a king in that never truly cared about his people and worried more about his origin and foreign investments. Than the origin of his people and their investments.

They got invaded by Napoleon's empire

All empires have a half-life of about two hundred and fifty years, maybe ten generations.

Spain's lasted about average length.

The things you have to do to maintain an empire are the things that eventually cause it to collapse. People from the metropole will only fight for patriotism for so long before they expect to see some gains from empire, so at some point the leadership has to deal with that. The subjects never want to be ruled, so at some point the leadership has to decide how to deal with that. And other empires, some who still have plenty of young men stupid enough to die to enrich old men, are also competing.

Did economic theory like inflation even exist before the Spanish empire? I figured it was that time period where economic theory as we know it began to form.

Economic inflation has existed as a force long before it was ever undetstood. The roman empire suffered from inflation, they were just unable to conceptualize their fiscal problems and react accordingly.

Spain did not have the agricultural capacity to support an overseas empire. It very quickly ran into population troubles with massive depopulation due to wars on the continent and sailors being sent abroad. Portugal faced a similar issue.

On the other hand England was able to sustain economic developments that made the land more efficient to support a constantly growing population. Raw goods in its colonies had a market in London, and manufactured goods had a market in the low industry colonies.

There was very little economic interdependence or dense resettling of population of Spaniards in their colonies, they simply did not have the population to do so. Their colonies acquired supplies such as beef jerky, leather, etc from other colonies that specialized in their production. They were more concerned about taking out as much as they could without respect to developing states so much. Cuba, Mexico, and the Phillipines were the only high functioning colonies of Spain, and Cuba only became high functioning after its independence from contracts with Hershey for sugar.
