Vigilantism is illegal because you're supposed to let the police and the courts take care of those things (muh due process) but in this case the government certainly is not going to do anything at all. The problem is that people confuse "freedom of speech" with "freedom from the consequences of speaking." The law protects your ability to speak. It also protects you from assault. It does not protect you from being insulted. As >>722199 points out, a lot of people equate "being insulted" with "being assaulted." So there are a lot of people who think they (a.) can say whatever they want, and (b.) cannot be insulted or ridiculed for saying stupid things. We have ended up with a lot of idiot feminists who behave this way. We also ended up with a lot of idiot rightwingers who behave this way. The Constitution (in simple terms) protects you from the Federal government and State governments.
