I don't know if he was a Marxist, but Canada had a socialist premier in one of its provinces.

He stole 6 million dollars apparently through drug dealing, apparently using labs reserved for the army, all while preching about muh morality.

I am from Canada and I don't know who you are talking about.
No province has ever had a Communist premier.
Many provinces have had social democratic premiers dating back to the 1940s and continuing up to the present day. They have been no more "socialist" than the Labour party in the UK, which has been in power off and on since the 1940s too.
Look for the political parties "Cooperative Commonwealth Federation" and "New Democratic Party".

AMA about that piece of shit dictator and the current state of politics here

I'll start with: The CIA did intervene in order to cause unrest against Allende (just like they did with other countries in LatAm)

Did they set up clandestine printing presses or did they smuggle pesos through the Andes?

>retarded electoral system put a communist into power with only 33% of votes
>knowing that his hold onto power is shaky, Allende begins giving free weapons, training and equipment to paramilitary communist groups
>with this new power basis at his side, he begins enacting radical reforms, attacking private property and, under Soviet guidance, begins the bolshevitization of Chile
>the Congress asks the Army to step in the repeated violation of the Constitution
>Pinochet takes heed and depose Allende
>realizes that there are tens of thousands of Marxist guerrillas in the country and he must do something about that before leaving power
>"free helicopter rides" ensues
>handles economic policy to Chicago Boys, social policy to Jaime Guzman and just chills out
>after a few decades, ask people if they still want him
>under the brainwashing of communist school teachers and Marxist professors, the Chilean people refuses him
>Pinochet doesn't cheat and just leaves power to commies

Now these commies want to change the Constitution and ruin Chile.

What Pinochet saved Chile from in 1973 was from a fate similar to modern Venezuela, but it seens like dumb Latin Americans really need to suffer in the flesh to realize that communism doesn't works.
>>
>>697659
Of course I don't blame everything on the CIA, the Unidad Popular wasn't very good at economics either.

But sometimes I'd like to have a bit more socialism in a country where we literally are a case study against neoliberalism.
>>
>>697674
I'm sure that >10 years of regime wasn't necessary for the well being of what used to be a republic.

Yes, the commies did violate the constitution too but maybe, just maybe, if the state finished seizing the means of production from big multinationals we'd have more money here to finance decent healthcare and education, for example.

The current state of affairs shows that The Chicago Boys' little play pen is crumbling onto itself: I just want copper prices to plunge forever and more antitrust cases so we start exploring other options for markets.
>>
>>697640
Also, as a followup (I'm also Chilean) Pinochet first economic policies were really, really bad.

He (and the clique of economists that studied on Chicago under Milton Friedman) brought Chile into, yet another, economical crisis during the 80's. This was caused by the de-regulation of the economical system which caused an extreme amount of inflation, plus the Banks, having little to none regulations asked the Central Bank of Chile (El Banco Central) money which they used to give away instantly and maintain a false idea of having a lot of (Cuentas por Cobrar - I don't know the exact term they use in English-speaking accounting, so I hope someone knows the exact term), but all this caused Banks to go into bankruptcy and the country was going into shit (yet again), since money was being devaluated and they had a fucking huge debt to the Central Bank that they couldn't pay.

Pinochet solved this by getting all the presidents of the banks into jail (this is true) and even the Minister of Economy at the time. Afterwards, he brought some less extreme economists that applied bigger regulations to the system (Hernán Büchi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hernán_Büchi being the most notable and important one) to fix all of the shit. He was the one that allowed Chile to grow and now we have some of the most strict Bank regulations of the entire world (yeah, it's true). So no, Chile didn't grow because we followed stupid Friedman-esque policies.

How do I know all of this? I took a class of Macroeconomics under Óscar Landerretche - https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Óscar_Landerretche (He was minister of Energy under Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle)

Seems like the type of guy from whom you'd take economic lessons and do the opposite of what he says.
>>
>>697724

I just don't understand how these Austrian free market types can sustain their delusions. Their policies have consistently tanked standards of living since the mid-eighteen century yet they won't stop deifying ''the market.'' It's weird and can't be mentally healthy.
>>
>>697734
What you mean, Pinochet wasn't a genious nor someone that did good on the country, he did everything because smarter people told him so (Jaime Guzmán being the notable one).

To understand Pinochet and give an opinion, you would have to understand the influence of his assessors and close people, not the man himself, because he is/was just another ignorant southerner of Chile coming from a martial family.

Pinochet himself didn't make the country grow, it was just other people pulling the strings, he was just a puppet that didn't like commies and I hope that that 4chan realizes that.
>>
>>697640
How bad was Allende? I've heard that people really hated him (I heard he was trying to use a very small electoral victory to implement communism as fast as he could) and welcomed Pinochet.
>>
>>697747
He's actually pretty objective in how he teaches economy. He didn't go full central planning with us, he said that IF there was a crisis Keynesian economics are the best option in the modern globalized world, but if you have a really great system that has a perfect equlibrium, then go with a liberal economy.

He never really showed his true colors during the classes, except when he talked about the dictatorship because he hated it.
I mean, this nigga was president of the CORFO, if he was super duper commie how would he get there?
>>
>>697674

>under the brainwashing of communist school teachers and Marxist professors, the Chilean people refuses him

given that "communists" were in power for 3 years and Pinochet for 17, it's quite remarkable that Marxist brainwashing was more efficient, don't you think so?

>>697640

Many people hated him in the 1970s, his deposal was widely celebrated, but modern Chileans idolize him because they were educated by communist teachers who treat him as a martyr and saint.
>>
>>697724
The term for cuentas por cobrar is IOUs iirc.

Yep, Pinochet did a bunch of stupid shit and now in the country we are just waiting for the old conservative cucks who support him to start dying from ass cancer so we can finally move on to a more social-liberal state.

Hell we didn't even have divorce laws until very recently: Chile is the most conservative country in LatAm.

>given that "communists" were in power for 3 years and Pinochet for 17, it's quite remarkable that Marxist brainwashing was more efficient, don't you think so?

Latin American dictator never removed communists from the education system, that was their greatest error. It means that even if you kill current communist activists, the next generation still turns commie.
>>
>>697795
a commie bureaucrat in CORFO: it's like government YCombinator/seed capital.

I hope you understand.

>>697789

Many people hated him but he also had his fair share of lovers: Modern educated Chileans don't idolize him, we just give him the benefit of doubt and recognize that history has been unjust to him
>>
>>697787

>Earns roughly 32% of the vote, primarily amongst disenfranchised middle class Germans between 19-35

>Brilliantly allows the SPD to split the leftist vote, abusing the leftist divide of the Weimar Republic while pandering to the Catholic south

>Gets just enough votes to become the minority leader

>Uses remnants of some old Imperial trickery in order to become Chancellor

It wasn't a perfect democracy but there hasn't been one of those since Athens. He got the vote legally using legal loop holes and partisan trickery that occurs on an even larger level today.
>>
>>697783
I have heard about cybersyn but my impression is that it didn't get deployed for enough time to see if it worked.
Spanish Wikipedia describes it better than I could, sorry if I can't help you that much.
>>
Also worth noting: There were fewer votes in the election where Allende won because the rich cucks were all in their holidays: that's what they get

Nota bene: the only reason why I'm here communicating in a language that isn't official here is because I was born in a wealthy family in a class favoured by Pinochet that currently lives in one of the richest neighbourhoods in the capital.

God bless this banana republic.

I live in a middle to low class neighborhood, yet I can still write and in this 'non-official' language (which is mandatory in every school in the country). What's your point?

You are making it sound like only rich people in Chile know English, which is false and a very bad stereotype.

You are forced to take English lessons in every respectable University of the country. I'm not going to give statistics (which you haven't provided either) but honestly there's a fair percentage of Chileans that can at least understand English, specially kids. Social class isn't as big of a deal, as it used to be in the 90's or even in the 2000's, when it comes to being bilingual honestly.

Chile is an exception inside Latin America, it's probably the only country in the region that has an strong right-wing student movement, thanks to Jaime Guzman and his gremialismo.

It's not "bullcrap". In Brazil, for example, the military dictatorship openly admitted it let communists occupy key positions in the education system and in the cultural industry because that would be a "escape valve" from their frustrations over exclusion from politics and economical decisions.
