It's mostly to do with the fact that the vast majority of common knowledge about the Three Kingdoms period comes from a historical fiction called The Romance of the Three Kingdoms written during the Ming Dynasty. Due to contemporary Chinese politics, it's quite clearly biased towards painting a positive view of Liu Bei and his kingdom, and portrays Cao Cao as ultimately adverse to Confucian values.

There are some historicity issues, as to be expected, but it's very solid for an introduction to the Three Kingdoms and Chinese history in general.
The story of the Three Kingdoms is a really big deal in Asia, even outside of China. There's all sorts of television series, books, manga, games and anime on the subject, so whatever kind of media you like there's probably a Three Kingdoms story done in it.

Probably helps there's a fair bit of media about it available in English: the ROTK novel has had a few translations, there's Koei's various games like ROTK and Dynasty Warriors.
