Ceasar is the single most competent individual to have ever appeared in recorded (and almost certainly unrecorded history as well) history, and even if he was born as part of capite censi he'd probably still have ended up dictator or at least consul. Discuss.
What made him such a genius above geniuses, was it genetics? Nurture? Radioactive spiders?

Pic unrelated, just some idiot
>>
Pompey was better
>>
>>559417
Pic related is the real reason the roman republic fell and became yet another shitty empire, albeit a large one.
>>
>>559428
Not in a million years.
>>559431
Agreed. Sociopathic asshole.
>>
>>559417
>was it genetics
yes he descended from Mars and Venus
>>
>>559444
None of the other descendants were as brilliant though. Gaius Marius might have been the runner-up for the most competent senator in the republics history, and he wasn't even patrician

>great man determinism
>>
>>559466
It has nothing to do with determinism. Caesar was simply so brilliant that in any scenario he'd rise to the top.
He could play chess for a day and beat bobby fischer.
If he had tried his hands at science we wouldn't have cancer
>>
>>559417
agreed.

>Caesar was the best Roman General!
Even taking into account exaggeration, his victories must have been pretty damn stunning to get these levels of exaggeration desu.
>>
>>561477
That's a picture of sulla you dunce.
And without marius the germanic tribes would have ended rome.
>>
>>561484
lol my bad, I am not able to tell ancient romans by their busts
>>
>>561480
Sullas opponents were idiots and his armies were better. Also propaganda doesn't need to be close to the truth at all.
Even in personal, non-military accounts caesar was a badass.
>>561486
Yeah, guess I overreacted, sorry.
>>
>>561494
nbd

man i wonder though if sulla's reforms to the political system of rome had come through at an earlier time through a different route than a dictator for life if it would have actually made a difference in keeping the republic togeather
>>
>>559507
If he was so brilliant why'd he get killed

>>559417
thats a funny way of saying Augustus
>>
>>559465

Marius was a fucktard hick who set the stage for the collapse of the republic. His reorganization of the army to be chiefly composed of proles took the military power out of the hands of the citizenry and into the hands of whoever could supply the penniless with loot. His proscriptions began half a century of oneupmanship in the field of political purges, weakening the aristocracy of Rome until eventually the old nobility pretty much ceased to exist. Because of these two things -- military power moving out of the city of Rome and into the control of warlords, and the corresponding decay of the politically powerful class within Rome itself -- the city and people of Rome lost relevance more and more the longer the principiate continued and eventually ceased to exert power over the provinces altogether. Fuck Marius in the ass and in the mouth.
>>
I prefer Marcus Aurelius over Caesar, however his finesse and political talent was quite spectacular. He balanced fighting off senatorial enemies (which most Roman senator could barely manage on its own) while simultaneously conquering 2 new provinces for both Rome and himself.

>>561565
His success both in Germany and the civil wars prompted the senate to assassinate him because of fears that he might become a king, which if you study Roman history is known as one of the bigger taboos of Roman Culture. If someone declared themselves king, any citizen could kill the man on the spot without fear of reprisal. It goes to show you just how paranoid the Romans were about their republic
>>
>>559417
Genghis Khan was objectively the best human to ever live.

Everyone else like Caesar and Alexander the Great were all born with silver spoons in their mouth.
>>
Objectively inferior to cato.
>>
>>562029
Caesar was better.
Genghis was a savage that just happened to live in a time where the world was ripe for the taking, caesar managed to rise to the top in an environment with tens of adversaries greater than Genghis.

>>
>>561921
Were those fears rational? Putting aside the fact that killing Caesar ironically brought about the Empire anyway, and the fact that the checks and balances that kept the Republic together had been steadily eroded long before Caesar. Was he going for King?
>>
>>559417
>Sulla an idiot

Kill yourself. Rome would still be the greatest power in the world today if his reforms had been followed. Unfortunately, he didn't quite understand the nature of democracy; but that's understandable considering even most people today don't understand it.

no, caesar is morally unquestionable.
>>

kek
>>
How do you think Alexander fares against Caesar?
>>
>>562596
More influential, less brilliant.
Alexander was surrounded by great people and was a great man born into the leading role of those great people. caesar had equally great people as his political opponents
>>
>>559417
>even if he was born as part of capite censi he'd probably still have ended up dictator or at least consul.
That's literally impossible.
>>
>>559417
>Caesar

You meant Augustus Caesar right? Because sounds about right.
>>
>>562634
He'd literally make it happen.
>>562638
Gaius Julius Caesar obviously. The one before augustus, not all the insignificant ones before that.
>>
>>559417
>the most competent in history
>letting himself get assassinated
He was brilliant but that title might go to someone like Genghis Khan who was a slave at points and died of natural causes (granted Caesar was kidnapped by pirates) or someone largely unknown to history who managed to dodge a huge amount of adversity and was almost constantly thinking, planning and doing.
>>
>>562596
Alexander died after facing only one enemy. We don't have enough to decide. Romans considered Germanicus their Alexander.
>>
>gaius marius became consul, the roman equivalent of president, while being a pleb an italian farmer, the modern equivalent of being a muslim transgender black lady in election

But he was just that good.
>>

>modern equivalent of being a muslim transgender black lady
Nigger pls. Plebs had been routinely becoming consuls for centuries by then, and his family was already active in local politics. He was more like JFK than a fag nigger and well you know it.
>>
Scipio Africanus. His strategy from a military perspective could not have been more flawless. He literally never lost a battle in his whole career. Conquered Spain, defeated Hannibal, destroyed Carthage, other generals are more known because of their long, glorious campaigns and their subsequent political success. He didn't need long campaigns. He came, he fucked shit up, and he went home. No designs on glory or power. Just clean military success.

Remeber, Caesar gets murdered in the end. He was brilliant, but he wasn't that brilliant.
>>
>>562998
Did gaius marius ever lose a battle? what about caesar? can't remember off the top of my head.
>>
>>563012
You'll have to look at the histories of Marius in Numidia warring with Jugurtha. I believe he lost a battle there.
>>
>>563031
I don't think he did? Maybe when Metellus Numidicus was in command, but he was an absolute retard, that can hardly be blamed on him. I think his consul and pro-consul period in Numidia was pretty much a curbstomp, but not sure.
>>
In memory of Marsellus the man who brought us in germany left side of the rhine the civilisation while the east side was left to the wood fucking pagans
>>
>>563036
The warfare was mostly guerilla warfare, which Marius suffered as much as Metellus during the campaigns. Marius eventually won the war though. Not exactly a pitched battle, but there were many small battles.
