Marius was a fucktard hick who set the stage for the collapse of the republic. His reorganization of the army to be chiefly composed of proles took the military power out of the hands of the citizenry and into the hands of whoever could supply the penniless with loot. His proscriptions began half a century of oneupmanship in the field of political purges, weakening the aristocracy of Rome until eventually the old nobility pretty much ceased to exist. Because of these two things -- military power moving out of the city of Rome and into the control of warlords, and the corresponding decay of the politically powerful class within Rome itself -- the city and people of Rome lost relevance more and more the longer the principiate continued and eventually ceased to exert power over the provinces altogether. Fuck Marius in the ass and in the mouth.
I prefer Marcus Aurelius over Caesar, however his finesse and political talent was quite spectacular. He balanced fighting off senatorial enemies (which most Roman senator could barely manage on its own) while simultaneously conquering 2 new provinces for both Rome and himself.

The warfare was mostly guerilla warfare, which Marius suffered as much as Metellus during the campaigns. Marius eventually won the war though. Not exactly a pitched battle, but there were many small battles.
