I'd say yes, most of Russians can't understand pure Ukrainian language. In fact, many Ukrainians speak on a mix of Russian and Ukraininan, called Surzhik. And most of Ukrainians can understand Russian just because they all watched movies on Russian, read books on Russian and so on.

Also Slavic languages exist on a continuum, just as Northern Germanic languages. You're not learning a new language so much as unlearning the one you work in. Frustrating. Polish and Ukrainian share 70% lexical similarity vs Russian and Ukrainian at ~62% only. The whole question of Ukrainian identity should be seen as kinda bullshitty. It's a wonder I can speak english (although not so good). Probably there is also a lack of motivation, but overall found myself unable to learn any language.
