Can't say about the actual USSR, but I can testify from the country that almost became the 16th republic. Every other household had a TV, practically everyone had a radio.
There was a great emphasis on locally produced movies, theatre productions, songs, etc., tho western stuff also made their way into the general public. There was even a political satirical magazine where they made fun of the commies (in a innocent way of course, otherwise the'll end up in the work camps).

Watching tv
Cinema -- tickets were stupid cheap -- students liked to play hooky and instead spent their time in the nearby cinemas instead of lectures -- teacher often had to raid theaters to bring their students back
Circus
Playing chess/dominoes/backgammon (in asian republics)
Playing soccer
During winter -- hockey and/or ice skating (every block made one because of how easy it is). Or just make an ice-hill
Reading -- each soviet family had bookcases with shelves filled with all kinds of books. Book shops used to sell popular books as a tie-in to some socialist tripe, like collected works of Lenin or proceedings of the latest soviet congress

Bulgaria.
No tanks and angry stares though, we almost became part of the USSR voluntarily.

I'm from Turkey. I've met many Turks who lived in Bulgaria during communist times. They all spoke favourably.

Most popular was having guests and drinking and dining together, talking, singing, dancing, etc.
Other big winners were playing chess and sports, watching theater or opera, if you were in a big enough city for those to be common. Reading, and writing, were popular, and many people were subscribed to magazines showing short fantasy or sci-fi stories, and would write and send their own stories to be published there.

Contrary to what I read, tourism, hiking, camping were not popular at all, until the later period, when the railroad system and cheap (like couple of dollars cheap) international travel around the USSR became possible, and people would go to Bulgaria for some sunny beach time.

Also popular in the late USSR, although not officially, were raves and punk concerts in basements.

I remember muslims being persecuted by the communist government. Or maybe it was just some more radical organizations?
