As it turns out, command economies can work well when you're simply shoving peasants off of the fields and into factories, but when it comes to actually competing with an capitalist society, especially a capitalist society that has reached a post-industrial, heavily automated, service based economy, you don't have a chance in hell.

Taiwanese have more government welfare programs and public healthcare and education available to them than mainlanders. Having some heavy industrial concerns owned by the PLA doesn't make you socialist.

This. I mean on paper it probably looked great since command economise are fairly common. They're called budgets and are used within a lot of companies.
But even handling a small company is a pain in the ass and unexpected costs fucks up your budget. This is common knowledge. Command economies won't work unless we have computers able to crunch the numbers. But by the time we have that we'll live in god knows what society since political scientists and sociologists will have computers strong enough to accurately emulate entire groups.
We're close to it. I mean we use the same programs people dealing with water movements use when we simulate how humans move when evacuating areas.

In Russia, it was essentially a coup of the middle and upper classes against the entrenched military-bureaucratic alliance that had persisted since Stalin. While the planned economy was a failure precisely because it didn't service those in power effectively enough, the idea that communism imploded because of the economic troubles of the stagnation period is mostly false.

You underestimate the amount of control the party has over that hyper capitalism. Sure it is a volatile, consumerist economy, but it is being carefully managed by communist regime.
