Some wise men like Socrates or Epictetus weren't.
You can just use your imagination to construe any human action as being driven by fear or greed if you just try hard enough, so whatever.

Humans hoard things that increase their happiness.
Humans avoid or try to destroy things that decrease their happiness.
Happiness is subjective, so this has many forms.
Humans aren't driven by greed, you don't see people hoarding things that make them unhappy, where as something driven by greed would hoard regardless.
I guess you could say that humans fear unhappiness though.

Heroin makes you happy, but everyone who has been close to that drug knows what will eventually happen and it's not happiness.
Plenty of people do things that really don't make them happy, but they do it out of compulsion, because it satisfies their neuroticisms.
