While the USSR was kind of shitty, it was the greatest geopolitical disaster in human history, after that the US and NATO were allowed to go unchecked and really started fucking up the world.
There are both pros and cons for the collapse of the USSR for the people living in it, some countries did well from the collapse like Poland and the Baltics while other countries basically got shit all over like Russia, Ukraine, Central Asian states etc.
I think it is fare to say also that the US and west showed their true colours in the 90s and completely fucked up approachment with a new Russia, instead of helping her develop and forming a bond with the people, the west went full Ayn Rand and basically bent Russia, her people and many other eastern euro states and raped them back to the 1920s.
One of the most tragic things I find though is that the culture of the USSR was lost, by that I mean the culture of intellectualism and atheism and solidarity, Russia today has to be one of the most reactionary right wing nations on earth with a huge portion of their population basically religious zealots.

USSR really fucked up the world and split Europe in half, and helped spread a shitty economic system and government type that fucked up the world even more.
tl:dr USSR & US fucked each other. USSR fucked up Europe.
A massive geopolitical disaster that was only amplified by the attempts to rush through it as fast as possible by Gorbachev and the west resulting is stuff like massive amounts of weapons going into private hands and then from there getting sold into third world shitholes

While this is essentially true almost every former eastern bloc nation still have huge approval ratings for communism altough this can be seen as reactionary "good ol days" mentality
