What must have been going through the minds of the first Gaijin to meet the fierce but honorable Nihonjin (and vice versa)?
>>

"Look son, Barbarians."

Since, you know, the first Gaijin (meaning Foreigner) to meet Japan were the Ancient Chinese and the Koreans. Who both had a low opinion on the tribes who dwelt there.

"Hey look there are still retards that use swords"
>>
Probably

"Holy shit, look how short these little fuckers are. And why are they wearing dresses?"

The first westerners arrived in Japan in the late 16th century.
>>
>>516586
Yes but we had archaic firearms at that time.

It's not like they didn't see the value. The japanese took to firearms extremely quickly.

Alongside more archaic weapons such as crossbows and pikes. Japanese tactics wouldn't have seemed particularly archaic to a 16th century European. Plus the Japanese developed pike-and-shot formations themselves once they adopted the musket.

Quite an obviously expectable outcome, given the weight and maneuverability of the weapons
>>

samurais, ninjas and vikings are meme shit.

You know, you don't have to ask an anonymous Chinese cartoon board.

They wrote about it extensively.
>>
Iwakura Mission report from 1871 used to be posted on /int/ with first impressions by Nips travelling around Europe.
Lots of stuff like how they viewed their neighbhours, what their major exports and imports were, how the countryside/city was and cultural notions like how North and Central Europeans considered keeping their bloodlines pure important.
>>
>>516596
Unlike the Chinese, who never used pikes in the early modern period.

Pissed me off desu. Also the comment about the rapier being made of inferior metal to katanas.

Given how light the fencing foil is and the greater reach of a one handed sword thats not impressive, particularly because the fencer receives a hit that would split his head open less than a second after landing his hit.

Now this example isn't much better, so lets go to primary sources
