Good movie or cringe worthy, from a historical point of view?
It's not as bad and cringe-worthy as the likes of Gladiator or Braveheart or something along those lines, but it is pretty in-accurate historically.

This is post-Meiji Restoration though, I don't find it hard to believe that samurai would bring the armor out just for symbolism.
Kinda rusty on the subject, but I'm pretty sure Japan consulted America as well as Prussia and France and anybody else they could contact from the West. But yes, they did develop a preference for Prussia.
Can't argue about the "no guns" thing though for samurai, they totally would've shouldered a rifle.
