Slavery was organized and promoted by europeans in the western hemisphere between XVI and XIX centuries. It was not an "accidental" event of modern economic history. It was a crucial event of the first historical moments in the formation of world capitalism and of the primitive accumulation of capital in the UK. Between the XVI century and 1888, more than 14 million people, mostly out of western Africa and the gulf of New Guinea were ripped off their communities and deported to the european colonies in America. This "black cattle" allowed for the expansion of the first kinds of agriculture for-export: the plantation economy. Without the american riches and without the slaves and african commerce, the economical, political and military "take off" of Europe and specially the UK would have been limited to a decisively minor scale.

It was and it wasn't. The Atlantic Slave Trade developed because West Africans were the biggest slaveholders around. Barbary Razzias couldn't keep up, since it's much easier to capture people in overland raids than have to sail across the mediterranean, and you can just retreat from the coast to avoid pirates while in Africa there's no real place to run.
And it's not just a race thing, there's repeated reports of English pirates joining the Barbary corsairs whenever England was at peace with France and Spain.
