What is the point of art?
there is no general point of art. it has a different point in different eras and different cultures.

To enpower the STATE
The best art? To steer man's soul towards God
To approach the Divinity nearer than other men, and to disseminate the divine rays among mankind.
To take the mind in unexplored pastures.

Art is a point by itself.
>the intrinsic value of art, and the only "true" art, is divorced from any didactic, moral, or utilitarian function. Art for art's sake.
Art is an end in itself. People who ask these type of qs are commonly unable to experience art in any meaningful way. They see others create art, they see others enjoy art, they see others deeply moved and touched by art, yet they remain unable to do the same. This incapacity ignites their hatred toward artists, art-lovers, & art in general. And in their hatred they are perfect. Unbeknown to them, their passionate hatred fills their lack of artistic experience.
Fuck em.

1. To distract you from the certainty of death
2. To lessen the mentally negative effects of knowing you are going to die
3. To leave something that you consider important behind, thus believing that your short existence is not in vain.

Base entertainment or money, probably both. That's all that is left to Art now.
Welcome to the consequences of deconstruction.

Anon, it is actually possible to go beyond the fear of death. Life is great when you're able to do that.
Art exists to make the familiar unfamiliar, breathing new life into the mundane, and allowing you to re-experience the thrill of seeing something for the first time.
Read the above while thinking of Starry Night, for example. Its reference point it's just a town, yet the spark of creativity that VvG breathed into it allows us to see the mundane (a fucking town at night) in a wholly new way.

It is still true, though. All forms of culture ever conceived existed because of the inevitability of death. The most common is: "Even if I die, at least I will have left something good for the next generation; something my children and grandchildren will get to enjoy."
Art inspires the further production of art in humans. There is no point, only pattern.
It helps us to reflect on our own values and the values of others. Its an ongoing reflection of our impressions, ideas and emotions.

It is not fear, it is just the knowledge of its certainty. You have to find meaning for your life, since there is apparently none other than to survive and reproduce. Thus, art is a manifestation of this knowledge: the artist is trying to find meaning for his life and the viewer expects to distract himself until he dies.
Effectively it is propaganda, and too often quite deliberate.
to make you feel good under the increasingly oppressive regime you are under
now get back to work
It's funny how people say art challenges the state even though the breads and circuses seem to make people more willing to gush about it and defend it rather than challenge it
then there's Marx called religion "the opiate of the masses" despite it historically causing the downfall of more states and civilizations than it protects
only takes one fucker to say "you're reading the scripture wrong" to split an entire continent in two.

To keep one sane and expression.
It's generally existentialist, although sometimes it's for beautification, propaganda, religious purposes, or something like that.
>entire thread full of freshman-tier over simplifications
Beauty does not need justification.
Only a profoundly sick society could place utility as sole mediator the Good.

If you have to ask, you might be autistic. Haven't you ever seen something so beautiful that you desperately wanted to remember forever?

Aesthetic contemplation is one of the facets of life that make it worth living. You wouldn't understand...

Besides, it's a freshman tier question.
But by all means, give us the sophisticated answer.
Maybe it has something to do with communication and tool use.
Not really a point, just an overlap between two specializations; communicating abstractly and manipulating tools.
Dogs may consider certain scent markings to be artful.
To get rich and famous from it lel
