Sure, I guess.
>Unfortunately a lot of his legacy was lost
This is something I can agree with. Only thing that was kept from his legacy was 2 term presidency, and even that was not always uphold.
But then again, both Hamilton and Madison who wrote his farewell speech knew that stuff like the hope of non-partisanship was far-fetched and that parties are here to stay.

Yes, we learn many myths about him and nothing about his actual presidency and the times that surrounded him.

Yeah, people seem to be more aware of General Washington than President Washington. The policies of Hamilton combined with the respect Washington commanded and his evenhanded (though Federalist leaning) tone helped keep the country from falling apart during the early Republic. I don't think you could've really had anyone else play the role of President at the time that would've been able to do the same. Shit, even by the end things were getting testy for Washington as the Jeffersonians were stepping up attacks on him as well.

>I don't actually hate lincoln though
It's kind of funny because Lincoln himself was a very polarizing figure during his presidency. Even among his own party or people who would be his supporters he was not a popular person. He basically won the nomination for the 1864 election due to stacking it with people he had appointed in his first term and even then only barely won re-election which you can maybe attribute more to people hating McClellan (and even then, votes shift a percent and we're probably looking at President McClellan) and Sherman capturing Atlanta than people liking Lincoln.

If he'd never been assassinated (and the canonization into American sainthood that followed), I think he'd be looked at very differently if he wasn't killed. Probably the 19th century equivalent of LBJ or someone like that in that maybe he's generally regarded as good, especially by historians, but public opinion being vastly different.

He wasn't shit as a general, just mediocre. He was a great leader. The people who make him out to be a great politician are those who claim so because he set the "rules" of the Presidency. If judged by the same standard of more recent Presidents, he's certainly one of the worst in terms of policies.
>>
>>476109
Not really bad-ass in the sense of war stories but in the more modern sense of jockey and physically intimidating. Arguably getting shot in the ass hasn't been as common of a pastime in the second part of the 20th century as it was in 1900 and earlier.

Can you elaborate on that senpai

>>476115
His aversion to power guaranteed America's destiny as a republic
>>
>>476154
The economic policies pushed by Washington, since he was puppeted by Hamilton and the Federalist Party, crippled American abilities to pay back war debts. This doesn't take into account the loose accounting of the First Bank of the United States, built solely on Hamilton's economic policy, which crippled the ability to pay debts even further. We couldn't afford to import food for Americans and many states threatened to leave the Union ~1795 or so. His neutrality stance brought about an undeclared Naval War with France, though this generally gets heaped into Adams presidency, which made trade even more difficult. Since the American economy was built on commerce, mainly tobacco, we almost died before we were even out of infancy.
>>
Do modern Republican presidents tend to be either extremely shitty or great, while modern Democratic presidents tend to congregate around the middle?

This is a fair point, but the little credit the US had after the institution of a National bank was squandered by the First Bank which is why it was abolished and the Second Bank was put up in it's place. The First Bank was pretty much cronyism for Hamilton and his Federalist buddies.

Abraham Lincoln. I would have included him in overrated, but this guy is responsible for the most American deaths in a war ever, and egregious overstepping of constitutional authority. The United States of America is now the United Provinces of Washington DC because of him also, and our regional traditions and identities are still in steep decline today because of him. He is also worshiped on almost a demi-god level for supposedly being some champion of equality and freedom (which he was not). Made the union involuntary, shitting on the principle of secession, which regardless of how you view the CSA, was an important check on the balance of the power of the federal government much like Britain's threats of secession are shaping the EU for the better today.

>By May 1806, Charles Dickinson had published an attack on Jackson in the local newspaper, and it resulted in a written challenge from Jackson to a duel. Since Dickinson was considered an expert shot, Jackson determined it would be best to let Dickinson turn and fire first, hoping that his aim might be spoiled in his quickness; Jackson would wait and take careful aim at Dickinson. Dickinson did fire first, hitting Jackson in the chest. The bullet that struck Jackson was so close to his heart that it was never safely removed. Under the rules of dueling, Dickinson had to remain still as Jackson took aim and shot and killed him. Jackson's behavior in the duel outraged men of honor in Tennessee, who called it a brutal, cold-blooded killing and saddled Jackson with a reputation as a violent, vengeful man.

I think his importance and popularity have been only growing after the fact. His presidency wasn't that big of a deal, really. When it came to policy he often caved in, and had his fair share of scandals. But he know how to talk and to influence public discourse, which is largely a long-term impact. "Relocation" that ended up killing thousands due to negligence and incompetence.

Forcing the Cherokees in particular to move off their land was heinous. They not only attempted to fully integrate, they had basically adopted the US as their homeland, and fought in nearly every American conflict, only to be betrayed and forced to move half-way across the continent because some greedy fucks in congress wanted to mine the gold on their land.

The ToT is despicable. There was nothing wrong with the persecuting of natives who attacked settlers or fought against the US, but the Cherokee literally did nothing wrong.

Depends on how you view socialism. Half of the people love him, other half hate him.

Even though he did get us out of the depression, his programs and policies removed competition and allowed corporations/businesses to collude with each other which unnecessarily delayed the depression. The great thing about competition is that the economy becomes self-correcting.

>>

Also remember that he looks worse with 70 years of hindsight since many programs put in place were never reformed or phased out with changing circumstances FDR couldn't foresee. For example: Social Security, it made sense when FDR put in place and worked well but was created with the expectation that aged ratios stay relatively constant. Then, after FDR died, the Baby Boom happened and said Boomers fucked i tall up by not having enough kids of their own to keep the system working the way it was intended -- with an ageing population you have less people putting in and more people taking.

Curiously enough, in modern times one of the biggest criticisms of FDR was that he was too socialist, but one of the biggest criticisms back when he was in office was that he wasn't socialist ENOUGH.
