A Mormon said it was, and they're like creepy religious robots or something.

It's bizarre, my partner's distant family are mormon, they're reasonably normal, if a little dense. They give me the impression it's because it gets into a small community and then is just passed down. Similar to Jehovah's witness from what I can tell from encounters, sad to see incredibly smart students dropping how out of high school because on their family's religion.

Conversion is usually directed towards people who are down on their luck and at a bad point in their lives, faith provides them structure and a social network. So they attribute their overcoming this adversity to faith, rather than to the element of structure and social support. Once a religion reaches a certain size, social inertia takes over and it gains tacit credibility.

Because you're born into it, all your friends are mormon, and all your family is mormon. From middle school onwards you're pressured into taking a seminary class that's walking distance from school and once you graduate you're expected go on a mormon mission by everyone you know. Once you get back you get married to another mormon in the temple and you go to a mormon university like BYU.
