Chiang Kai-shek already led the sort of dictatorial rule that causes a lot of the problems that China suffers today: he was just openly capitalist rather than pretending to have anything to do with Communism anymore. Given that he would have had the consolidated finances and military power of the whole of mainland China, there would have been zero reason to transition towards more democratic rule like we saw in Taiwan after his death.
