That'll teach'em to just stand there in a dense group while we fire from concealed cover

>what is the difference between muskets and rifles
But standing in dense lines and shooting at the enemy is how the Revolutionary War was won.

the painting is Stand Your Ground by Don Troiani
it depicts the battle of Lexington, Massachusetts, April 19, 1775
a battle in which the Americans did not take cover, and a battle the British had won without losing a single man

reading about the history of early american gunsmithing is pretty interesting desu

I do not altogether enter into the new inventions. I fought in "the Bush" in America; so thick it was, that we could hardly pierce its denseness; my regiment was opposed to Kentucky riflemen. We had muskets, and we beat them. We had red coats- they had brown coats; yet we slew more of them than they did of us. We are told that at the Cape, the Kaffirs lie hidden till our soldiers come within a few feet! Then what do we want with a rifle?

ambushes are only effective as long as your enemies don't use cavalry to wipe your sorry ass from the face of the earth
>>417004
Pretty sure it was won by France on the sea
The u.s. infantry did line warfare and bayonette charges just like the british when towns were at stake or ro secure large objectives, and only used guerrilla tactics to attack supply lines
>>418264
We used guerrilla tactics to assassinate British officials and officers throughout the entire war. There are even records of people like Cornwallis complaining that Americans did not fight "traditionally".
>>418159
Ironic, non?
>>419260
then Americans complained when the British tortured them.
>>419260
>There are even records of people like Cornwallis complaining that Americans did not fight "traditionally".
"Hurr unfair"
This is hilarous coming from the country that:
-used longbows to compensate lack of melee skill in Middle Age
-stole French and Spanish colonies in America while these two were fighting for their borders in Europe
-paid all of Europe to fight Napoleon for them
-conquered shitton of lands from backward people thank to technological advantage
I mean, Britain's military history is the embodiement of fighting unfairly/dishonorably
If there is one country that have no right to complain on that, it's them.

> Using ranged weaponry
> Dishonourable
Anon, that's retarded.
What I find bizarre is that despite the success the US had using irregulars in small unit actions, we didn't adopt a permanent scout sniper school until Vietnam.
Meanwhile, the Brits jumped on the bandwagon and established specialist marksmen units armed with rifles immediately after the Revolution.

What success?
>>421420
disrupting supply lines and targeting officers
>>421407
New nations are obsessed with legitimacy. Getting your own fancy-uniformed line regiments was what "real" countries did. So they went that way.
Skirmishers still existed, certainly. Doctrine just had not come to the point yet where the modern conception of a "sniper" existed. Anywhere.

>Doctrine just had not come to the point yet where the modern conception of a "sniper" existed. Anywhere
it was more technology. What good is a sniper if he can't accurately hit something more than 200 yards away even with the best rifle available?
>>421227
Go tell that to the french at Crecy
>>416986
Brits used guerrilla fighters too....
>>416986
>>423412
lots of them....
>>423412
Skirmishers aren't guerrillas. Neither is just firing from cover, like OP describes.
>>423427
skirmishe...wha? Brits used loyalist rangers and their indian allies as independent units. some of the best asymmetrical commanders; Brant, Ferguson, Rogers....fought on the British side.
>>421215
unf thats the good shit right there
>>423453
Rangers are primarily intended for light infantry tactics in combat, not for asymmetrical or "guerilla" warfare.
>>417004
Yes. By the French.
