No, but you would have to be blind not to see how divergent Christians have been from the principles of Christ throughout history.

Simon Peter cut off a guard's ear, that's pretty hardcore

Certainly not the Teutonic ones or the Fourth one. I don't know about the others either.

>Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

"There were two grounds on which service in the Imperial armies was irreconcilable with the Christian profession; the one was that it required the military oath, and the countenancing, if not the actual performance, of idolatrous acts: the other was it contravened the express commands of Christ and the whole spirit of the Gospel." 'Early Church History to the Death of Constantine' (London 1892), E. Backhouse and C. Tylor, p. 128.

The Eastern Church still maintains war is a sin. They're a lot easier today when it comes to penance, but you still have to confess killing people in war to a priest. Fighting in a war used to come with not being able to receive the Eucharist for three years.

>St. Basil the Great did not count the "shedding of blood" committed during wars as murder, but he does require the penitent to abstain from partaking of the Eucharist for three years.

>In the Byzantine Empire, the enemies of the State were also the enemies of the Church. So the defense of the State also became the defense of the Church. The State was considered to be protected by God since it was connected to the Church. The Church has upheld its position on war and has never deserted its stance. Emperor Nicephoros Phocas of Byzantium (963-969) requested the Church to recognize the people dying at war to be classified as martyrs.

>The response was "How could they be regarded as martyrs or equal to the martyrs those who kill others or die themselves at war, when the divine canons impose a penalty on them, preventing them from coming to Divine Communion for three years."

In the bible. Romans gave convicted criminals a plaque with their crime on it when they crucified them. In the story of the crucifixion it is noted that the romans gave Jesus a plaque which read 'king of the jews'. Those around him where named banditoi in the original Greek of the new testament, which can be translated as both bandits and rebels

Jesus wouldn't approve of anything, but while he was a brilliant thinker the fact is he was kind of an unrealistically idealistic hippie.

So yeah Catholicism was never about doing everything exactly the way Jesus wanted. Deus vult, bitch.

Erm, how does being "king of the Jews" equate to being the crime of banditry again? And if were a rebel against the Romans, we did the Pharisees want to kill him, but the Romans were really reluctant? Wasn't the guy who got freed by Jewish demand, a rebel? Didn't Jews later massacre Christians for refusing to take part in the uprising against Rome?

His crime was rebeling against the established Jewish king and priesthood which at the time where a client kingdom of the Roman Empire. His crime was trying to be king of the Jews. The plaque was a way of mocking his attempt. The fact that you think he could not be a rebel because at a different time jews where also rebels just shows your lack of understanding of the complex situation in ancient Judea. There where allot of different groups within Judaism which had conflicting views of how the Kingdom and the religions should be run. Some where violent towards Rome, some towards the Jewish establishment, of which the Pharisees where a part, and some where violent towards both. Zealots for instance had not to long before the time of Jesus started violent religious fundamentalist rebellions. It is not a coincidence that we still use the word zealot to describe religious fundamentalists. Some historians have connected Jesus to this group. The whole table flip in the temple episode gives you an idea of Jesus's rebellious nature
