I'm really interested in European medieval history, and would like to study it on my own time. I'm interested in any aspect of the history (military strategy and tactics, intrigue, politics, dynasties, etc.)
>>
"War Cruel and Sharp: English Strategy under Edward III" by Clifford Rogers is a personal favorite of mine.

R. C. Smail's "Crusading Warfare" and "The Art of War in Western Europe in the Middle Ages" by J. F. Verbruggen are also important reads.

If you're interested in Henry V and Agincourt and want to get into primary sources, try Anne Curry's "Agincourt: Sources and Interpretations".

Thanks. I'm currently reading The Hollow Crown by Dan Jones, hence the OP picture.

Norman Cantor
The Civilization of the Middle Ages

Chris Wickham
The Inheritance of Rome

>>

Edward Grant has some good books in the history of Science in the middle ages
>>
Give me moar suggestions, guys. Since a few military books have been given, I'm interested in any good books that accurately portray the political realities of kingdoms, republics, etc. back in medieval Europe. I'd also like good books on the history of any medieval dynasties.

Ah, fuck. I said "good books" twice.
>>
Feudal Society - Marc Bloch
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle
Chronicles - Froissart
The Treasure of the City of Ladies - Christine De Pizan
The Canterbury Tales - Chaucer (don't read a translation)
The History of the Kings of Britain - Geoffrey of Monmouth
Life of Alfred - Asser
>>
If you like historical novels there's The Accursed Kings.

It's the basis for most of ASOIAF/Game of Thrones.
>>
I want recommendations for books on the Crusades that are good reading (not a huge slog). Ideally a bit of all but naturally the Third Crusade will do.

Here's a bunch of bibliographic articles. Use bookzz.org to find free books:

these articles on byzantium cover more than their titles suggest
Battle of Manzikert

Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
>mostly 1500s to 1800s but some books covering medieval period
http://pastebin.com/r0ZTJbvK
The Medici Family
>probably mostly covers the family in the 1400s at their height. but it is one of the most interesting renaissance dynasties and if your interested in how a family could manipulate a republic into a dictatorship/hereditary monarchy then you'd like this

Chivalry

Feudalism

The Medival industrial revolution is pretty good. It's a readable book about industry in the middle ages.

You are totally right.

Most histories will cover a military aspect to a good degree of detail while focusing on the actual political and societal landscape of an era.

But what you really want are lots of specific books OP, because it is better to understand history as a great tapestry rather than a single picture in your head.

The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara Tuchman
>>
>>422392
Don't read this, she was a commie

I'd recommend Johan Huizinga "Waning of the Middle Ages" if you are interested in Medieval culture.
>>

It's not too patrician, but A Time Travelers Guide to Medieval England was really enjoyable. Great information on the logistics of daily life, food, fashon, travel, justice, ect. More anthropology than history but a good read.

Hm, that seems like a really good read.
