He was just some dude preaching for changes to Jewish faith during a time of hardship. There were a lot of people like that back then. Jesus gained above average traction, someone probably said he was the fulfillment of a Jewish messianic prophesy, and Jesus didn't deny it. I doubt he ever gave serious thought to it. He made use of the power the title gave him to make what he saw as a positive change in the world and probably thought to himself "sure, why couldn't I be the messiah".
