Why on earth do Africans follow the Abrahamic faiths? Christians and Muslims enslaved them for centuries and many used theological justifications like the Curse of Ham

Africans were some of the first christians, m8

Because, for one, enslavement was not something unusual in Africa even prior to the arrival of Muslims and Christians. Many of the ones that were sold into both Christian and Muslim slavery were captured by their fellow Africans, regardless of religious standings.

Secondly, when it comes to the Christians, only West Africa really saw enslavement, and most of the people in Africa today don't have that great of interest in the past slave trade outside of general Post-Colonial resentments. Most of the conversions of African people to Christianity (minus the northeast part of the continent) happened in the later 19th century colonization of the continent; long after the Atlantic slave trade ended.

For the same reason Slavs, Turks, South Asians, and South Americans do. Integration into the gravy train that was Christian/Muslim economic and diplomatic world.

Think of all the aid given to them by outside Christians and Muslims. Missionaries built schools and hospitals. The Africans are not going to give up the Abrahamic religions any time soon.

Also, many native African traditions blended into Christianity and Islam, kind of like how Christmas is an adaptation of pagan winter festivals.

Africans were among the first converts to christianity

And Islam was spread by trade, not the sword in Africa

You could ask why northern europeans follow christianity after being forcibly converted

Most africans mix it up with paganism anyway

As liberal missions deserted the mission fields, missionary work became a domain of conservation denominations. The result is that Protestantism in Africa is overwhelmingly conservative. This is true even of African Anglicans whose bishops barely speak to their counterparts in Britain.

Today, Africa still receives various missionizing foreign faiths, such as Mormons, Seventh-day Adventists, and Jehovah's Witnesses.

But on the whole, missionaries no longer play a significant role in African Christianity. The extraordinary Christianization of Sub-Saharan Africa was accomplished mainly by Africans and sustained by new denominations they originated.

The key turning point in African Christian history occurred early in the Twentieth century, when the Bible was translated into the major African Languages, today it's more than 650 languages.

Like the scholar Philip Jenkins noted, "Once the Bible is in the vernacular, it becomes the property of that People. It becomes a Yoruba Bible, a Chinese Bible, a Zulu Bible."

Going off of this information, I recommend you look into these five characters: Isaiah Shembe, William Wade Harris, Garrick Sokari Braide, Joseph Ayodele Babalola, and Simon Kimbangu.

>Christians and Muslims enslaved them for centuries

So did their fellow Africans. In fact Conversion sometimes meant they had a good chance of being manumitted as the Abrahmic faiths took a dim view of enslaving their fellows in faith. I believe the Quran as specific injunctions against enslaving fellow Muslims.

>the Curse of Ham
This idea never went mainstream in Europe or American, and when this idea was in vogue slaves were never directly enslaved by Europeans. They were always first enslaved by their fellow Africans in tribal wars, then sent out to the coast for market to European slavers.

From Abrahamic faiths Christianity is less evil.

What's your opinion on the idea that African proselytisation by is low-hanging fruit for conservative Western Protestant denominations that have all but abandoned missionary work in their own "post-Christian" societies?

Ethiopians were literally OG Christians.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church was started by Ethiopians who had been Jews for hundreds of years already. They still circumcise and keep kosher to this day, and bring out copies of the the Tablets during their Divine Liturgy.

The Curse of Ham being black skin has no biblical justification. People may have used Bible to do evil on dindus, but it's not because of Christianity itself.

where can i read about this? Islam was spread to west africa through the almoravids right?

If you destroy their history, you control their future. Literary work on their past are nearly scarce, thus they only have the present to guide them.

>And Islam was spread by trade, not the sword in Africa
you mean islamic """traders""" would capture slaves from villages surronding the ports they were trading at and when confronted say "lmao if they were muslims we wouldn't have"
>>
>>529428
I'm sorry, I meant sub-saharan
>>530274
Nope. Initial conversion during the middle ages consisted of Swahili and Sahelian kingdoms creating new trade links. Most pagan slaves were taken and sold by pagans.

It's during the early modern era where we see "GRR, get in the bag you damn dirty pagan scum!"
>>
>>528455
its because of how smart they are
>>
Why are Africans still Africans? Africans enslaved them for centuries, and many used geographical justifications like "being near enough to raid"?
>>
>>528455

Egypt, Eritria, and Ethiopia were Christian long before the fucking Muslim cult showed up.

As far as the west, you can blame the French missionaries for that. Bible in one hand, bread in the other. Pretty typical.
