Well he failed to achieve what he wanted, so he's objectively not as great as, I don't know, Genghis.
Also he destroyed a lot of good things and did not build many when he could have.

As for who really is the greatest man... Augustus ?

To be honest he dindu nuffin', France was already being attacked by the rest of the civilized world
>>
>>382393
Hardly. Could only maintain his popularity by winning battles, by exporting his revolutionaries to other countries(and getting them killed) he created a demographic crisis that made France a second rate power in Europe.

He did many great things too, bringing an end to the revolution(though this was limited) and BTFOing every other power in Europe for as long as he did, plus the napoleonic code which was pretty great.
>>
>>382469
He fought for liberalism and now it dominates Europe and the West, and therefore the world.

Genghis fought for booty and glory and now Mongolia is a poor shithole and he is dead and way less famous than Napoleon.
>>
>>382541
>Genghis fought for booty and glory and now Mongolia is a poor shithole and he is dead and way less famous than Napoleon.
you and i both know this isn't true, mate. Genghis and Napoleon are both figures you learn about in elementary school, everyone knows them
>>
>>382393
If you count bloodshed as a measure of greatness, then he is behind Stalin and Hitler.
>>
>>382560
>Genghis and Napoleon are both figures you learn about in elementary school, everyone knows them

Maybe now, I don't know where or when you did elementary school, but no in my times Genghis Khan was not part of elementary school. Neither did anything east of the Middle East until the 1900s, by the way. I've met college history students who didn't know that the mongols conquered China before watching that Marco Polo series.

Maybe this changed some years ago, but as far as I know in elementary school kids learn european history.
>>
>>382569
>Maybe now, I don't know where or when you did elementary school, but no in my times Genghis Khan was not part of elementary school.
dunno what time you were in elementary school but it was definitely in the curriculum when i was there ~10 years ago
>Maybe this changed some years ago, but as far as I know in elementary school kids learn european history.
They learn European and American history with just the basics of the rest of the world, and Genghis is/was part of that (dunno if this is still true)
>>
>>382393
Daily reminder it started as defensive wars for France and he had nothing to do with Hitler (outside of steamrolling Europe)
>>
>>382469
But Genghis never tried to achieve anything
He just rampaged wherever the wind brought him to
>>
>>382588
Not him but I'm 19 y.o and don't remember seeing anything about Genghis
When I was in (French) elementary school and we weren't learning our country's History there were basics like the birth of civilization in Summer, the Egyptian/Greeks/Roman but the Far East was very much left aside
>>
>>382600
>French
Oh, well maybe that's why. I'm American, so i'm kind of surprised to see we learn more about the rest of the world than Yurop does
>>
VIVE L’EMPEREUR
>>
>>382600
I'm spanish and it was the same. If you learn something that isn't happening in Spain it's because a) Nothing relevant was happening in Spain at the time and/or b) Something relevant for Spain was happening outisde of it. For example we learnt that Muhammad was born in Arabia, that he was expulsed, forged a religion etc. but once the moors put their steps in Europe the Middle East stops being relevant and the last mention to it is to tell how our muslims were a different country.

>>382612
Well, considering America has no recorded ancient and medieval history, it's less weird that they learnt about asian history. I suppose.
>>
>>382594
He tried to be a successful conqueror, and achieved that. He amassed riches in amounts unimagined, and spread his offspring all over asia.
>>382541
Napoleon fought for liberalism ? You make me laugh.
>>
>>382612
Well we are taught a lot about the rest of the world later, in high school. Middle-school outside of the first year was mostly European but in high school the rest of the world is there although we talk about the past 150 years mostly. So no Genghis but we learned about China's 20th century, as well as Japan, North/South America, Africa, Russia etc
>>

The thing that made the Mongols so influential on world history came after Genghis Khan's death. The fact that they had one continuous empire spanning the entire Silk Road allowed ideas and technology to cross the world incredibly fast.

Without Genghis Khan unifying the Mongols, this may have never happened. He may not have had the ambition to do that, but he very much was a tremendously influential historical figure.
>>
>>382612
This >>382639
might be a reason

The USA have a History and an interesting one but you don't have to learn about 1000 years of it, even more since I even learned about the Gauls in school, which leaves more time for the rest of the world
>>
>>382648
Then what he fought for? Are you a brit that demonizes him or an american that believes that being a liberal means being a SJW?

I'm sorry, I thought we were all about critical review here. If you want to study history, being a killjoy is mandatory. And that anon is absolutely correct - if you make a claim of "greatness," you have to quantify it in some way. Is greatness measured only by military prowess, or does it have other elements? Is it defined by acts or legacy? You see now why pedantry is necessary?
>>

I am a frenchman who sees him for what he was.
He fought for his own power, mostly, and secondarily for france. He didn't follow closely a political ideology, except for his ambition. He didn't want liberty, or equality, he wanted a solid, powerful empire.
Liberalism doesn't prescribe censorship, dictatorship, plebiscites, slavery, wars of conquest,...
>>
>>383520
You're a disgrace to France.
Kill yourself before you bring any more dishonor.

I agree, I loved him in American Psycho.

Something I just have to ask at this point: why is it that Napoleon looks awful in 90% of his portraits? You'd think whoever was painting them would understate the balding and his gut, or at least not make him look so depressed and pathetic.

>>
>>383520

Well obviously if you wanted liberalism to take root, you'd have to tear down the entrenched institutions of the past, first. And they aren't going to do it willingly. It's going to mean war, WAR!, and war demands certain exigencies and expedients that do not befit a liberal nation in peacetime.

Peace is a product of the soldier. First victory, then peace.
>>
>>383960

He was brilliant, but unsustainable. Augustus is a better example of someone who synthesized all the genius of statecraft into a single person (giving him credit for choosing good subordinates like Agrippa and maintaining their loyalty, here).
