Very close to the famous castle part there's a highish hill with more walls built on top of natural rock outcroppings. That bit seems to make a lot more sense, since it's be a good defensive position with a good view all around.
IIRC the thinking is that they started out with the hill part, and then built the castle part below it later (perhaps when they felt really secure about where they were).
