The biggest reason would be that Hitler felt that Germany simply needed a whole lot more land in order to sustain itself. In his book, Hitler talks about farming and predicts that people will starve to death unless agricultural output is increased dramatically to feed the growing population. So basically, he was wanted a shitload more farmland. The problem that he was talking about was real, but it was solved by genetic research rather than simply increasing farmland.

the fact that the rest of Europe had colonial empires worried Germany which didn't, because increasing development meant increasing globalization.
other European powers were able to source their needs from their colonial holdings, while Germany was dependent upon other European nations for its development needs.
Germany's solution was to try and get a share of their empires and gain more land area to support a larger population so they could be self-sufficient too.
