BOOK MEGATHREAD

We should have a weekly book thread on a Sunday for requests or recommendations to cut down on the amount of "recommend a book on _______" posts.

I'm looking for some good books on North Africa Campaign of WWII, preferably the British side.

Michael Rostovtzeff - The Social and Economic History of the Roman Empire

I've heard conflicting opinions about this book. The two people I know for a fact who read this book were deeply interested in some of the claims made the author.

not sure about the war itself but you can get an idea of overall strategy and leadership by reading Churchill's account of a previous war in the same region. its short and gives a lot of insight on Churchill himself and the region

Trying to get into history more. Currently I'm working through the Greeks, and I've read a bit of early Christian theology.

Does anyone have recommendations for good overviews of medieval/feudal Europe? What about a good general text of rennesaince/enlightenment Era Europe? I'd like to then move into the modern Era (I've read some American history.) I'd like to have a general view of history (just focused on Europe right now,, but I'm interested in the rest of the world) and then dig in to more specific texts.

Any recommendations welcome. Economic History, social and cultural history, military history.

Thanks /his/

Morley, Neville. 1996. Metropolis and hinterland: The city of Rome and the Italian economy, 200 B.C.–A.D 200. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge Univ. Press.
>Rome can be seen as the archetypal consumer city, but Morley generally agrees with Hopkins on the possibility of the stimulating effect of Rome on its hinterland; it did not have a stagnating effect on the local economy.

Hopkins, Keith. 1980. Taxes and trade in the Roman Empire (200 B.C.–A.D. 400). Journal of Roman Studies 70:101–125.
>The empire had a positive effect on the economy by stimulating trade among cities, the army, and farmers, so that the latter could meet the tax demands of the state.

Duncan-Jones, Richard P. 1982. The economy of the Roman Empire: Quantitative studies. 2d ed. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge Univ. Press.
>Fundamental, much-quoted work on the price of euergetism, as well as on wider economic questions. Examines costs in Africa and Italy and therefore the cost of municipal politics.

Finley, Moses I. 1973. The ancient economy. Sather Classical Lectures. London: Chatto & Windus.
>Building on Weber 1958, Finley argued that the ancient city consumed the wealth produced by its rural hinterland. The city did not produce goods specifically for trade with external markets, but instead for conspicuous consumption by city elites.

Greene, Kevin. 1986. The archaeology of the Roman economy. London: B. T. Batsford.
>Although not focused specifically on the city, this textbook remains a clear and comprehensive examination of the Roman economy.

Hopkins, K. “Taxes and Trade in the Roman Empire (200 B.C.–A.D. 400).” Journal of Roman Studies 70 (1980): 101–125.
>Hopkins argues that the expansion of the empire stimulated the economy of frontier zones and that the requirement to pay taxes monetized the economy of areas in northern and central Europe. An important macro study of the impact of the army.

Whittaker, C. R. Frontiers of the Roman Empire: A Social and Economic Study. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1994.
>An eloquent book that examines the frontier zones of the empire, noting the difference between a frontier line that separates and differentiates and a zone that unites and integrates. In his view, the very success of the Romans in establishing frontier zones at the limit of areas where their 1st-century armies could operate in Western Europe undermined the empire by bringing prosperity to previously underdeveloped lands whose people could not have been a threat to Rome.

Potter, D. S. “The Limits of Power.” In A Companion to Roman Imperialism. Edited by D. Hoyos, 319–332. Leiden, The Netherlands: Brill, 2012.
>Discussion of the political and economic constraints on the expansion of the Roman Empire after Augustus. Stress is placed on the nature of debates about expansion within the Roman elite.

books on early modern spain:

Casey, James. Early Modern Spain: A Social History. London: Routledge, 1999.
>Casey brings together the extensive social and economic history research of the past few decades. A very large and useful bibliography.

Domínguez Ortiz, Antonio. The Golden Age of Spain, 1516–1659. New York: Basic Books, 1971.
>A very readable synthesis of the social and economic history up to that point.

Elliott, J. H. Imperial Spain 1469–1716. 2d ed. New York: Penguin, 2002.
>Formulated largely around political and economic history, this survey of Spanish history from the succession of Isabel to the end of the War of Spanish Succession offers a good, clear introduction to the people, ideas, and institutions of early modern Spain.

Ruiz, Teófilo F. Spanish Society, 1400–1600. Harlow, UK: Longman, 2001.
>Ruiz takes a different perspective on periodization, emphasizing the connections between the late middle ages and the early modern period. Focuses on aspects of daily life, festivals, and violence.

Lynch, John. The Hispanic World in Crisis and Change, 1598–1700. Oxford: Blackwell, 1992.
>A companion volume to the same historian’s Spain 1516–1598: From Nation State to World Empire (Oxford: Blackwell, 1992).

Kamen, Henry. Spain, 1469–1714: A Society of Conflict. 3d ed. New York: Pearson Longman, 2005.
>Also available in Spanish translation, Una sociedad conflictiva: España 1469–1714. The title of this book refers to Américo Castro’s famous phrase describing the Golden Age in Spain as a “conflictive age” (De la edad conflictiva [Madrid: Taurus, 1976]). By one of the foremost historians of Spain. First published in 1983.
