Does anyone on /his/ do historical reenactment? I've been doing WWI for a while now and just about to start a German WWII impression. I really enjoy the hobby, especially the aspects where you aren't shooting blanks at fat rednecks 50 feet away from you.

Anyway, what kind of impressions does /his/ do?

Pic related, my WWI unit a few seconds after the gas alarm was called.

What part of the Midwest? There's huge events in Illinois for both WW2 and WW1. We also have a lot of people come to PA from the Midwest as well.

>>314476

Lucky fuck. I've always wanted to do Napoleonic but there's no units in the US.
>>
>>314525
There's a bunch, just depends how far you want to travel. I'll admit theres nowhere near as big of a following. ACW looks pretty dope though with the numbers involved.

I usually shave for events, because muh authenticity, it just makes me look like I'm 17
>>
>>314559
>it just makes me look like I'm 17
Good, they need more of that to counterbalance the large number of 40 and 50 somethings with beer bellies at ACW reenactments.
>>
>>314559
>I usually shave for events, because muh authenticity, it just makes me look like I'm 17

I got fucked up by genetics there. I can only manage wispy facial hair that doesn't even grow everywhere a beard would, but when I shave, I also look somewhere south of 18.

I suppose it would be accurate for WWI and WWII to have that in the ranks, though.
>>
this is really cool, OP. Thanks for the dump. I would love to do some stuff like this myself when I have more free time
>>
>>314559

Yeah I've heard that Napoleonic is basically the ACW of Europe. I might look into it, I've always wanted to do a Fusiler impression.
>>

Dude, WW1 is only two weekends a year. I work full time and go to school and I make out just fine.
>>
>>314665
Coolio, I live only 2 hours away from there. WW1 was always something I wanted to reenact. But atm I'm too poorfag to afford the gear, so I'm stuck doing Civil War with overweight 50 year olds.

It's a goal, though.
>>
>>314763

Hey dude, don't sweat the money thing. It took me years to get my kit together and we have plenty of loaner gear. Come try it out. You wanna do Allied or CP?
>>
>>314832
I honestly don't have the time atm. Going to school and working pretty much kills any hobby time I might have. Gonna wait till I graduate and have a steady job with normal hours before I get into another big hobby. thx, though.
>>
>>314832
I've been trying for years to make a proper German Empire uniform
>>
>>314887

You gotta be careful with the Bosche, a lot of the units are full of fat old rednecks. I'd recommend the IR 459 or 5th Rohr if you're set on CP though.
>>
>>314213
That's pretty cool. I watched my brother do Gettysburg as a part of our Boy Scout troop. I was too young to participate in the reenactment, but they marched like 50 miles of the Appalachian Trail in full kit (Union), from Harper's Ferry through Antietam up to Gettysburg. They were only 8th graders so they had roles such as water boys and messengers. It was so much fun to walk through the camp and take in the atmosphere. I never grew fond of hard tack though.

I also live about an hour from Perryville, Kentucky and there's a fun US Civil War reenactment there. There was a big cavalry charge I believe. That's really impressive to hear and see in person.
>>
>>315213

50 mile March in full kit sounds amazing. What unit does this?
>>
>>314437
You need to stop lifting or eat something anon. You look like a skeletal.
>>
I would love to but sadly, I'm not white.

A spic in a WWI reenactment would seem out of place.
>>
WW1 is becoming more and more my favorite war to study. There's just something about the aesthetic that's the stuff out of nightmares. Particularly the German stormtrooper uniform.
>>
>>315533

>>
I've always wondered how reenactments work, exactly.

Do you have some sort of loose script as to who falls in a firefight or something? If not, how do you know if you've been "hit" or whatever.

Are the battles made to be completely historically accurate, or is it like war games in which either side could win?

Granted, guy was the whitest looking Mexican i've seen, but there were plenty of Hispanics fighting in WWI.
>>
>>315564

Yeah this, our Zouave unit is really tight. Lots of Mexicans, Chinese and black bros do that impression since the French army had colonies everywhere.
>>
>>315572

>How do you know if you're shot?

It's basically an honor system but you'll know. For instance, if you're running between cover and four Germans open up on you, you're dead. If a machine gun opens up on you, you're dead. Most guys get "killed" from grenades, which are basically easter eggs filled with black powder and baking soda. You'll have that shit all over you and then you're dead.

Again, an honor system. But it's really looked down upon if you don't take your hits.

>Historically accurate or war games

Depends on the event and scenario. Most public events operate on a script, so like this group of Germans will attack this line of Americans here and then shit will hit the fan until the tanks arrive at this point. A lot of Civil War and RevWar reenactors take this event further and replicate the exact movements of the units they portray, usually on the battlegrounds they took place one. It's pretty cool when you see it.

Most WW1 events are "tactical events", meaning that there's a general decided upon scenario and time frame then it's just war games. We have a command structure up to the brigade level and we try and outmaneuver and fuck up the enemy.

There's always booze at the front. The French were really fond of this shitty red wine called pinard so we always have that around, some of the guys even have canteens full of it. There's also alot of brandy, which we typically drink before going over the top.

My main gripe with reenactors is that there's to many fat people around. It just looks silly when half that roman company is either fat and bespectacled
>>
>>318086
You just have to find the right groups. The quality groups tend to have less fatties, also "tactials" are better than airshows. I'm doing an event next weekend with a 24hr immersion. We'll be sleeping in trenches in the cold, I can bet that there will be no fatties there.

Many french soldiers wore non-issued clothes, especially during the 1914-1915 winter and in early 1915.
However:
a) although the pattern doesn't seem absurd, the fact that it is (or at least seems to be) cotton (instead of wool) and the high collar make it appear as quite unrealistic
b)the uniforms, adrian helmets (first issued in september 1915) and gas masks make it obvious that they are reenacting a period during which very few soldiers still had to wear non-issued clothes (as they had yet been provided with appropriate attire for winter/trenches conditions).
>>
>>318669

The Russians are always crazy. We have a Russian unit in the French Battalion, they're fucking nuts. Always drunk, always randomly zerg rushing the Bosche. Once a few of them got hammered and were somehow able to capture the German CO and XO. I have no idea how they did it.

You might be able to sew one, but finding the proper materials might be an issue. If I can give any unsolicited advice, I'd suggest that you meet up with a unit first, as most units have standards of gear, and often loaner stuff, or extra stuff that they will sell/lend to a newbie.

The stereotype of Russian drinking is extremely true in reenactment, they were constantly hammered, and many went onto the field so drunk they could barely stay in formation and keep their muskets upright. The Belgian police delivered a couple back to the camp I believe in the mornings.

That's the most inaccurate thing I've ever seen, so many of the smaller groups are missing from that. I'd see if I could help you, but I'd imagine all the groups websites would be in German. Reenacting WW1 doesn't seem acceptable yet in the UK because we all literally have somebody in our family that died in it. I'm sure there are WW1 reenactments around but the most popular reenactments are English Civil War, Medieval, Viking Age, Napoleonic and Roman.
>>
>>325099
A musket needs a full shotgun certificate, and an explosives license for the black powder.
A lot of ww2 reenactors use blank firers, because it's just easier, but it's actually not the most difficult thing in the world to get a section 5 firearm license, because the police actually accept that reenactment is a valid reason for it.

Maybe they think that even terrorists won't be so uncool to associate with us.
