Ukrainian cossacks were Ukrainians, could you possibly believe that? It's not an ethnic term, it's just referred to different people settling at a frontier, and Ukraine had a large one back in the day.
Ukrainian People's Republic was a Ukrainian state made by Ukrainian peoples using the right for self-determination, as the name suggests, then it got reconquered by Russians who established a Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, ostensibly a sovereign state but barely an autonomy de facto.

Ukrainian history is a path of constant resistance with threats coming from literally all sides and no dependable allies ever; together with life on frontier making people operate in a greater degree of freedom than most can understand. If I were to put Ukrainian national character in one word, it's stubbornness.
