Can any /his/torians explain why the ROI - NI border does this?

iirc at least one of those parcels of land traded places based on the result of a board game.

I think the area is a backwater so the central authorities don't give a fuck if a few thousand locals are massively inconvenienced

TL;DR: The border just goes along the lines of the six counties. There is no particular reason for that retarded section that relates to modern history.
It is very likely that already existed as part of the boundary between two counties before partition.
I'm sure there is a historical reason for it, but almost certainly not one that relates to the 20th century conflict in Ireland

Well, we tried to settle on an agreement with the British on a basis of "economic, self-determination, ethnic considerations", but the Brits went back on their word and we'd have lost land in Donegal where a large Protestant population was rather than gaining land, so we just kinda said "nah fuck it just leave it like it is".

The border is incredibly porous, and almost led to direct conflict between Irish and British forces during the Troubles (there was a bridge the British intended to blow up to stop the IRA crossing it, but the Irish deployed the Army and claimed it was Republic territory).

Nobody even tries to police it now, it's just filled with back roads, and we have a Common Travel Area (kinda like a mini-Schengen) so it's not like it needs to have border checks.

>Enclave #51, Dahala Khagrabari, was the world's only third-order enclave before India ceded it to Bangladesh in 2015. It was a piece of India within Bangladesh, within India, within Bangladesh. Less than 7,000 square metres (0.70 ha; 1.7 acres), in area and was the site of a jute field. 28 smaller enclaves existed within the overall complex

the British occupied North of Ireland is made up of six historical Irish counties (Armagh, Antrim, Derry, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone)

they just slapped the border of this artificially partitioned statelet down all around those six counties

tell me about it

To be fair, this doesn't even matter since they are both on the schengen zone and there is 0 border enforcement.
India and Pakistan or India and Bangladesh however is not only ugly but creates a lot of problems for people that live there.
As if being Indian wasn't punishment enough.

though I suppose there is no way of explaining why this border, let alone the entire statelet, exists so a little weird spot like that is pretty insignificant in the whole scheme of things
>>
Why does India and Bangladesh have such fucked up borders?
>>
>>423481
The whole boarder is more easily explained; it's a result of the ulster plantations that were an attempt by the english to "breed out" the irish by importing settlers. The only place they had enough settlers to constitute something more than a tiny minority was in eastern Ulster which now forms northern ireland.
>>
It's worth noting that Fermanagh, along with Tyrone, didn't recognise the Stormont government for a few months until their councils were dissolved.

Try getting a building permit when your land is spread out across the border(s)

Those were all eliminated this year. The people got to vote which country they wanted to belong to.

When the british empire left they did some odd things with the borders. a lot of their reasoning was motivated by foreign relations with russia and china. then they decided to partition the whole area based on religion in 1947, which resulted in india and pakistan. bangladesh didn't exist until much later; it was formerly part of pakistan (called east pakistan) even though it didn't actually join pakistan since india is in the middle
