I felt like Prince Charles' look at that point was a sort of "the country is being pissed on and all you cretins can do is laugh"
>>
No, it really couldn't have, and I'm in the wishful thinking crowd.

Relevant docco series, all parts can be found on Youtube:

That was pretty powerful. If I'm being honest, I actually teared up a little.

Don't some people in Hong Kong want to return to being a British territory?
>>
>>1424044
Some. They are a tiny minority though. They are directly opposed by another tiny minority who absolutely love the ChiComs for one reason or another. The vast majority of HK people though are politically apathetic in the way only East Asians can be.

>>1424057
Dono man, the yellow umbrellas seem to suggest otherwise.
>>
>>1424183
It's very easy for a shitload of people to be a tiny minority in Asia.

The 100 year lease was up, and Britain kept true to their word. Why would you want them to take the faggy way out and hold on?
>>
>>1424183
That still doesn't mean they want to be a British Colony. The most I've seen is HKers say that as a ridiculous extreme of how shitty being part of China is.
>>
Why did the brits hand back HK at all?

Don't they understand that any clay that comes under the control of the West, belongs to the West irrevicably and in perpetuity?
>>
>>1424057

As a Hong Konger, it's pretty much split into pro-democratic but remain in China vs go back to British colony vs. be like Singapore and be independent vs. pro-commie and let glorious leader rule over us and change our traditional language into shitty mandarin and simplifed.

>>1426243
it doesn't matter what anyone wants, y'all'r chiner's bitch and much sooner than the 50yr agreement they'll steamroll Hong Kongolese culture and turn the place into a vapid ratcage like the rest of the country

The issue was, the UK had a 99-year lease on Kowloon and the New Territories. However, they held the island of Hong Kong (and I'm guessing some outlying islands) permanently. If you've ever been to HK, the island is where the financial sector and the "downtown" that you see in movies is. A lot of people live there, but even more people live in Kowloon and the New Territories, which are not separated from mainland China by any body of water.

My impression is that it was unrealistic for UK to keep the island and just let Kowloon and NT default to China; they probably predicted the areas would default to socialism (although China was really moving away from that at this ti) and authoritarianism under CCP rule, and that strict borders would be imposed, crushing the daily flow of people from home to work and consumption. It would be like if Manhattan suddenly defaulted to the Soviet Union, while the rest of NYC remained in the US; the area is too integrated on may levels for it to be split up like that.

Given the possibility of normal CCP rule in Kowloon and NT, the UK probably decided to cede the island as well, provided that the 50 year "one country two systems" would be in place, in the hopes that China would liberalize economically (which it has), democratize (no such luck), and become a friend of the West (the relationship remains ambivalent) before that 50 year period ended.

A tiny minority that don't remember being a colony.

>>1424057
Pretty much.

>>1424183
The Umbrella protest was the complete opposite of pro-Colony.

>>1426243
The pro-Commies are about to landslide the coming election.

>>1426624
Or maybe it was because China would have fucking taken it by force.
