I've been researching my family tree and I've come across one of my ancestors in an old Canadian census (circa 1850s). He lived on the east coast and owned about 40 acres of land.

His trade/profession/occupation is pic related.

I'm wondering if this is difficult for me to read because it is a deprecated profession or an archaic word.

Can anyone provide some context of the time period or perhaps read this cursive? This is the highest resolution scan of the document.

Here are the rest of the professions listed on that page of the census.

These are all professions of house heads in the same township.
