The first wave of Muslim fundamentalism occurred in the aftermath of the Mongol holocaust which pretty much wiped out Islamic civilization at it's height.

The current (Wahhabi) wave of Muslim fundamentalism began in the 18th century with the ministry of the fiery preacher Muhammad abd al Wahhab.

Was there an equivalent traumatic experience that caused this second wave to take hold?

Yes, colonialism.

The Deobandi movement also rose in response to mostly British colonialism

After the Ottoman setbacks in Europe, it began to invite Western teachers to modernize their army, which then started leaking into the bureaucracy and then Ottoman society in general. This started a long process of European Liberalism mixing with Islamic thought in the Empire, culminating in the aftermath of Napoleon's invasion of Egypt and subsequent British hegemony followed by the Tanzimat reforms. Meanwhile in Persia Nader Shah began to bridge the gap between Safavid Shi'ism and Sunnism, promoting a fusion of both that he tried to spread with his conquests.

This made purists like the Wahhabis super salty.

But didn't really take off until about 1980.

Israel but mainly because the Saudis keep funding them. Any nutjob ideology will take hold if you throw money at it

The failed states left in the wake of western imperialism might have something to do with it.

>let's just ignore that Islam itself is a violent religion which started off with conquests, murders and conversions of other peoples and blame it all on Mongols and Israel.
