Rome

It was inferior to the hellenistic period, I wish Rome has only conquered Gaul.
Imagine a world in which you have many great powers in the Mediterrenean, Ptolomaic Egypt, the Seleucids, the Proper greeks in the Balkans, Rome in Italy and future France, Carthaghe in the Maghreb and Iberia.
Competition would have made science and technology advance at a much greater rate.
Rome didnt produce Archimedes or Erathostenes characters like the Hellenistic period.

I always prefer periods with many big powers over periods with one superpower.
>>
>>1388811
inventing agriculture and writing all by your own is pretty remarkable. in Eurasia + Africa it was invented only once.
>>
Greco-Roman probably.

I mean it was pretty great, probably the second best civilisation after the West, but it still gets highly overrated and credited with way too much. We Westerners still have a huge inferiority complex towards it despite having surpassed it in every possible way, so bad that many want to believe we actually belong to the same civilisation.

Wrong. Most developed and culturally historic pristine civilization to stand on earth. There's a reason the Olmecs, Sumerians and Peruvians are not household names compared to Egypt (and to extent China). The world wonders are incredible, they had a fairly large prescense past their time and they still stand today. They've standed the test of time.

>>
>>1389260
Maybe you don't. If Egypt and Greece are overrated than every civilization there ever existed was shit.
>>
>>1389278
You need to learn about basic logic.

Egypt and Greece are so highly rated that they're the only ones that could even be overrated. All the others are almost completely disregarded, how can something nobody ever talks about be overrated?
>>
>>1389220
the greco-roman civilisation has only been surpassed materially
were inferior to them in every other way
>>
>>1389287
Except in science, mathematics, technology, art, architecture, music, literature, philosophy, politics, administration, morality, and literally every single other possible way.

This Western inferiority complex is a serious sickness. That's probably the only area where we'll never equal Greco-Romans: self-confidence.
>>
Honestly, the Nazis.

If you had swapped the Nazi's uniforms any other nation's nobody would idolize them. The Hugo Boss uniforms are the sole reason they have a cult following. Imagine a WW2 where the British had the Hugo Boss uniforms, and the Nazis had some ugly green shit. How many people would be supporting the Nazis now? We'd be laughing at them.

Neoclassicism is the worst architectural style in the West, Gothic architecture for example is superior in every way.

>>1389342
Then what? Then nothing, Rome never made an ounce of progress in any one of those fields.

This isn't Sid Meier's Civilization. Progress doesn't automatically happen just because time passes. Progress has to be driven, and the reason we're more advanced is because it was driven by Western civilisation.

You're making a post denying the existence of Western art or architecture styles that aren't Neoclassicism, and of Western mathematics or philosophy, and claiming the Roman Empire, an unstable tyranny almost perpetually mired in chaos, assassinations, and civil wars, was in any way a better institution than Western nations. At that level there's really no point responding if I'd have to explain 1000 years of history of politics, science, and art to you.

Read what I was replying to.

Also, I already mentioned that it was invented in China independently, I was just making a point that it was also invented twice in the Middle East alone, not as the other guy said ("once in Eurosia+Africa").

You might have gotten the conversations mixed up anon, I was referring to this post:

"You're making a post denying the existence of Western art or architecture styles that aren't Neoclassicism, and of Western mathematics or philosophy, and claiming the Roman Empire, an unstable tyranny almost perpetually mired in chaos, assassinations, and civil wars, was in any way a better institution than Western nations."

Which tackles much more than paintings and music.
>>
I would say the Greeks too because they tend to be talked about way too much considering all the awesome shit that was happening over the same period in other places, for example Persia or China.
>>
>>1389526
this is pure strawmanning when did i deny that the existence of Western art or architecture styles that aren't Neoclassicism, and of Western mathematics or philosophy?
>claiming the Roman Empire, an unstable tyranny
roman republic=best political system
roman empire=best administration

It's not a coincidence, you can blame/credit climate change for that, it all started around the same time, right after the "Last glacial period", which signalled the end of the Ice Age, and caused a huge wave of desertification around the world, forcing a lot of people to come together near rivers to survive, and later jump start human civilization.

You'll notice that all 3 civilizations that invented agriculture and writing independently were established around rivers, and were surrounded by deserts in all directions. With Egypt being the most extreme case.

>>1389491
>Is the reason idiocy? Because those three were more influential in their spheres than Egypt was.
are you sure you're not the idiot here?
>>
>>1389602
>You'll notice that all 3 civilizations that invented agriculture

Except agriculture in West Asia was developed in Anatolia, fed by rains and not rivers. Also, the Mayan civilization was based not on rivers but on cenotes, surrounded by inhabitable jungle. Likewise for the Inca, substituting "altiplano" for "jungle".
>>
>>1389534
Euro-centrism.

Don't get me wrong, Greece achieved a lot, but it was in noway unique among its immediate neighbourhood, but given that they were the bases of Greco-Roman civilization, and that being the bases of Western Civilization, it's been given way too much attention/credit by Western historians.
>>
>>1389615
>but it was in noway unique among its immediate neighbourhood

Disagreed, only the Greeks developed advanced political structures based on the consent of the ruled, elsewhere despotism was the universal norm. Greece alone also developed a systematic approach to knowledge (philosophy), ad-hoc rulings and mysticism were the universal norm elsewhere.

You're right fampire. This era could do with more eromenos and religious orgies. Those gladiatorium deathmatches are pretty cool too. Boipucci shitposting and pro wrestling just isn't the same. Imagine.

>Tonight live at Madison Square Garden: Proconsul Gaius Donaldus Trumpicus presents for the education and entertainment of the republic: the a reenactment of the heroic slaughter of the rebel Parthian, Ossammulladen by the heroes of the marine Legio VI. Cakes will be distributed by the Cataline Brotherhood of Millers. The Catalline Brotherhood uses only the finest grain: Trve Roman bread for Trve Romans.
>>
>>1389608
>Except agriculture in West Asia was developed in Anatolia
Agriculture was only discovered once in the middle east, and it was in the Levant.

>Also, the Mayan civilization was based not on rivers but on cenotes, surrounded by inhabitable jungle. Likewise for the Inca, substituting "altiplano" for "jungle".
I was specifically talking about the Old World. and, the Mayans and Incas were pretty late to both agriculture and writing compared to post-LGM civilizations, even if they had discovered them independently, they weren't subject to the same conditions.
>>
>>1389205
underrated. Single superpowers stagnate advancement
>>
>>1389622
Each Mediterranean civilization had its perks, Greece was simply a later manifestation of its surrounding cultures, and, of course, it made its own contributions, but it isn't like it evolved in isolation, like say China, though it's often talked about as if it did.
