How much is actually known historically about Rurik, the semi-mythical founder of Russia? I've heard claims that he was a Finn, not a Norseman per say. Is there any truth to this?

How much influence did the varangian culture of him and his decedents affect the development of Russian culture?

Post any and all knowledge about Rurik and varangians in Eastern Europe in general.
