And of course they're real (without going into existentialism) as they can be measured through brain chemicals and activities.
However, there's a recent emphasis on culture in psych, so what's a real problem in one society is not in another.

This is a huge problem in both psychiatry and philosophy of the mind, alongside the lack of concrete definitions of what we mean by "mental" and "disorder."
The only thing everyone seems to agree on at the moment is that the current method based on the DSM is arbitrary crap.
