The map is bogus as of today. It's approximately accurate for Sorbian language area approximately 100 years ago. Nowadays Sorbs are minority everywhere, save for some clusters of villages scattered here and there. You definitely won't hear Sorbian spoken casually on the streets of Cottbus or Bautzen.

Nope, for the most part as I know ancient Slavic gods date back hundreds and hundreds of years and have their origins in indoeuropean societies. It was the Germanics who probably got influenced by IE gods, and even the germanic languages were influenced by IE culture not the other way around, so in other words Aryans around 4000 years ago brought Germanics in modern day denmark copper and bronze and also their gods, etc only to have scandinavian/finno ugric vikings sail down to eastern europe some time later and share their gods which are exactly the same as Slavic pagan gods but only with different names. If so east of Elba there were always Slavs. Germanics move from Scandinavia to South and they use rivers to migrate south. They influence their slavic neighbours. It take them some time but they didn't settle for long. And when presure from local slavs was too great they move south again.
It wasn't like in Roman Empire(who after fall of central authority, economic crisis and civil wars) lack ability to thrown them out. Unlike slavs who still was tribal and could mobilize every man able to fight.

This whole misconception of a "slavic people" didn't really gain traction up until the mid-19th century anyways.

But it had nothing to do with reality. Just as it has nothing to do with reality right now.
