Depends what kind of politics. The Republic is a necessary starting point. You're better off if you come to terms with the fact that Thrasymachus was right about everything.

For the foundation of modern political stuff: Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau (under protest, fuck that guy), Thomas Paine, if you're American, the federalist papers and the letters between Adams and Jefferson are really good.
Actually one of my favorites is History of Women Suffrage written and edited by the Seneca Falls gals, it's an amazing look into that movement and that time.

The French Monarchy 1487-1789 by Grant. It encompasses an amazing assortment of political problems while expanding on them in detail. Its a great read for Monarchists
