Where did the widespread tradition of asking a girls hand in marriage from her father come from.
I mean it used to be a thing in europe and asia and still is for some more conservative groups in the middle east.
>>
Because women are property. You can't just take a man's car. You have to ask for it.
>>
>>1353594
Because the man of the house the father, had direct control over the women in their family until they were married

>>1353598
If you are so socially incompetent that you cannot get what you want, what does that say of your beliefs of yourself if you cannot shift them?
>>
>>1353602
But how did this tradition become so widespread among so many different and faraway cultures?
>>
I know it was a common thing in Ancient Rome.

Technically speaking, for most of human history daughters were the property of the patriarch. Marriage was a transferring of property from the father to the new husband.

Because men are dumb
>>
because before the police and social welfare they had to make sure he would stay with her to help raise the kid and he wasn't a wife beater
>>
Is "women used to be considered property" just a meme? If they were just property why are the so many nice poems about women? Isn't asking the head of the house if you can marry his daughter a nice thing to do? I mean if dad approves of you he probably think you'll be good for his daughter.

Because people with autism who don't understand how human emotion works like to say what's on their mind for laughs. You'll find it common in places that have shed any sense of normality and health a long time ago.

Marriage is an alliance even between poor ass farmers, for making small loans and group insurance. Later it still continued because no one wants in law ass holes, until feminism, which correlated with a rise in ass hole in laws both in media depiction and personally

If you can't live up to your ideal and refuse to change it reflects you have poor self image, which feeds back to the first sentence.

Dude, you must have linked to the wrong post because you are making exactly zero sense.

"Considered just property"

Is a myth. They were handled in a property like property in some rare cases however.
But you couldn't kill them if you like, you couldn't trade them ( in Europe or Asia) you couldn't sell them.
So no they were not property.

Some culture they were legitimately property. Some cultures activity being imported into Europe now.

The reason to ask the father, and mother, was traditionally because a woman wouldn't marry without her families consent and support.
It would be crule to ask the girl then have her family day no. You ask the father first so by the time you all the girl it's 100% her choice if it happens. Everyone around her had agreed to support her so she can make her decision without any anterior concerns

It's just going over your head. It makes sense.

Marriage, historically, is an institution designed for the building of a household and the creation of a familiar unit, which is something that requires hard and honest work. Fathers are better suited to choose male partners who will be able to provide for his daughter and her family. If you let women choose their own partners, they will choose thugs and other shitty men as partners, men who won't be able to provide and will likely abandon her with children to raise as a single mother.

The transition from arranged marriages to "love" marriages, where women choose their own partners, in the Western world is the reason why the institution of marriage is dying.

If you're going to buy a pet you ask the owner.

Who cares about marriage to begin with. What are the material losses.

A better comparison would be that they were considered children.

Ultimately, societies where the institution of marriage is eroded are replaced demographically by societies where they aren't.

I'm not saying this is good or bad, just stating a fact.

You seem childish. Are you a woman?

>>1353889
Out of wedlock birth percentages and divorce rates aren't correlated with birth rates

Chart and implications do not mask, nor is there contemporary evidence of such interaction.

Nice try

Because it developed naturally.

You make a son: he would learn the family traditional way of maintain a family. The son of soldier would learn to be a soldier and the son of farmer a farmer and so...
But then you make a woman. In traditional oldtime family a woman does not earn a living. She just take care of the family in the house and breeds. But she's valuable because of that. And a young man wants her. Welp young man we need to make a deal. First a woman was buyed (that's the dote origin), and after that tradition was out it continue for some time as a more symbolic thing.
Then capitalism-industrial revoluions-imperial wars-women massively working-women suffrage-sexual revolution and whe're here now with something that looks totally alien to some 20yo firstworlder.

sorry my bad english.
