You know that Mexicans in Mexico don't even celebrate this, right? It's mostly a thing for Chicanos.

The actual Mexicans realized that there were two battles on the 5th of may. One the French lost, and exactly one year later another the French won. And entirely militarily speaking the French won the war. They achieved their wargoal of installing Maximillian as Emperor of Mexico. The problem was that in the North, the Civil War in the USA had ended and a unified America could start waving around their Monroe stick again. French power not solidified in the region enough, they cut their losses and fell back.

tl;dr: The Americans saved Mexico.

Because the french were overconfident and far from supply centers

But they bring 200000 rations of food thats like 140 days of food in per soldier in 260 caravans, and 400000 rations of wine...... still don't know why all the wine btw.

Wine is better than water in a lot of ways.

I don't see the point of celebrating an irrelevant battle
Months after it, the French attacked again, took the city and basically occupied the entire country for 4 years until American diplomacy convinced them to leave

It's basically like if the French celebrated some delaying action they did against the Germans in the Battle of France

Kek, this remind me of Americans argument about winning the Vietnam War
Actually these two wars are very similar:

The French certainly didn't win, as the side they supported eventually got overthrown
But they certainly didn't lose to Mexicans either as they couldn't do shit against the French and had to wait for them to leave due to an external reason (American diplomacy) to recover their country

Just like Americans certainly didn't win the Vietnam War, as the side they supported eventually got overthrown
But they certainly didn't lose to Viets either as they couldn't do shit against the Americans and had to wait for them to leave due to an external reason (hippies) to recover their country

They do in Pueblo don't they?
>>

They won because the French were fallible humans capable of making mistakes and not an invincible war machine. It was an important propaganda victory in the wake of the Mexican government being so easily swept aside in the early stages of the war and the US marching into Mexico City decades earlier.

This might sound corny, but it is like that scene in Rocky where the giant aryan is like "he is not a man he is like steel" while Rocky is all "he's just a man".

this true >>1370420 though it also backs up cinco de mayo

The French wanted swift negotiations, instead Mexico continued resistance until the geopolitical situation swung in their favor. The whole war really speaks to the argument of never giving up no matter how bad things get.
