I don't know but Mayan boxers used conch shells as gloves.

Non existent?

Depending on the performance, to the death.

They would tie two men to a bench (or facing benches), with gloves equipped with spikes. So it was a sit-down, beat-your-enemy-into-a-pulp affair.
>>
>>1317330

I remember reading that Pankration involved naked oiled guys just beating the shit out of each other with no rules. Sometimes people had their balls pulled off iirc.

In the Colonial US people were really fond of fist-fights at county court days. One I read about involved some guy getting his ear torn off and the whole crowd started cheering.

Assuming they weren't deliberately trying to kill each other, boxing was generally less lethal before we had gloves. Because trying to punch someone's face without protection will probably shatter your hand.

One of my colonial architecture textbooks had a section on county courthouses and talked about how they were focal points for the community. Everyone in about a 20 mile radius would meet up there every few weeks to gossip, trade, drink, race horses, gamble, fight, and watch judges lay down the law.

Gloves are to protect your hands from scraping in fisticuffs.

It's arguably the case that they are actually more dangerous as blunt trauma, especially to the head.
>>
>>1317885
>>1317892
In all seriousness, the goal of the game is to grab the opponent's testicles or to insert one's finger in their anus, as this is considered something that 'disarms' the other.
>>
>>1317931
As someone who has boxed and fought without gloves I'd rather get hit in the head repeatedly by someone without gloves than with gloves..
>>
>>1317938

Doesn't this depend on how big/heavy the gloves are?
>>
>>1317946
It's not only that. People are more willing to wail on you with gloves on. They don't have to think about protecting their own hands so the hits are harder.
>>
>>1317946
No it doesn't. If I'm punching you without gloves my hand will probably break before you're concussed or knocked out cold.

With gloves and wraps I no longer have to worry about my hands and can put my body weight on all my punches.

>>
>>1317959

Well, I've only boxed at parties, but taking punches from gloves seemed way less worse. It's also easier to block someone wearing big gloves and the gloves help you block.

I've been in fights and never have I given a shit about my hands, nor do I think anyone else does. Knock them the fuck out, worry about your hands later.
>>
>>1317983
Yea box with someone that knows how to punch and not a drunk douche at a party. And if you probably hit like a baby or just arm punch.
>>
>>1317973
True story: while I was in college in Miami we had this rich douche bag in our frat who had joined an MMA gym like 6 months earlier. We went out to a party that day in Little Haiti at a bar that another frat had rented for the night.

This rich asshole decides to slap a girls ass and when her boyfriend found out instead of being like " sorry bro I'm drunk" he went full "I'm a trained fighter pussy let's step outside"

We all stepped out and the second this rich douche tried to run and grapple this guy he let' out a blood curling scream and collapsed and had a small blade jammed into his shoulder.

The guy of course ran and like most people who stab folk in Miami did not get arrested.
Then for the embarrassment we kicked the douche out of the frat.

"Hur dur, without training no one can punch"

I once saw a pretty big guy brag all night about his MMA skills. He also was pissed about one of his friends getting beat up some while ago.

> Gets drunk and progressively more aggressive.

>Telling a whole circle of people he can fuck them up.

> Picks on small guy who is only tangentially related with "what are you looking at."

> Despite his mad skillz and MMA training, doesn't realize his three friends have backed away and he is now surrounded by about 15 people.

> Shoves small guy

> Other much smaller guy cocks back a bottle of whiskey and decks him across the face

>A flap of skin peels back off his forehead (bottle didn't break though), and there is basically a waterfall of blood across his face

>Stumbles two steps and falls over knocked out cold.

Apparently had to go to the hospital for concussion and stitches. His friends ran away and left him too. Proves no amount of combat training can save you from being a retard.
>>
>>1318028
>"Hur dur, without training no one can punch"
Is your story supposed to disprove that?
>>
>>1318049

It disproves the notion that being an amateur fighter, or even a professional one makes you immune to attack, and able to fend of threats because the untrained can't properly hurt you.
>>
>>1318012
You aint doing martial arts right if you actually want to get in fights outside of them.
>>
>>1317330
I think pretty much everything you can imagine was more brutal in ancient times.
>>
>>1318062
No one fucking said that. I just said you must punch with your arms or like a bitch. Being a trained fighter literally means going out and getting your shit pushed in for 99% of professional fighters.

Also, I'm an adult now. Fighting in the street is for teenagers and ghetto people. Military and police training don't save people from being fucked up. I never said that it does stupid learn 2 read.

>>

They have fewer injuries because they get far less momentum, have more rules on tackles, and are generally much smaller than football players.

It's literally not that uncommon to have players who are 300lbs in American football.

There's another factor which marked the acceptance of gloved fighting. Gloves don't protect your head, but they do protect your face. Bare Knuckle boxers were frequently temporarily or permanently blinded during matches. Cuts would become extremely deep and scarred afterwards.

But yes, your hopes of an easy knockout were much reduced. That's one of the reasons why gloved matched became so prominent: They increased the chance of a knock out, which drew more crowds.

Statistically people die more from bare knuckle boxing these days than official matches. Like 200 times as many.

But that's the thing, that's official matches, not ALL boxing with gloves. Meanwhile all bareknuckle is counted in one group. And official matches have rules, like fighters have to stop fighting if a doctor says so.

I don't still have the citation but at some point I recall reading about how boxing in ancient Greece became increasingly brutal over time, with boxers wearing lead plated gauntlets and taking increasingly drastic measures that lead to more horrible and disfiguring injuries, that it was banned and eclipsed by wrestling in popularity.
>>
>>1317932
This is blatant misinformation, the goal of the game is to get your opponent on their back on the ground. Grabbing of testicles is against the rules and does not happen often.

Is everyone on /his/ so eager to have their stereotypes reinforced that they don't want to check even the most obvious bullshit claims? We live in an age where you don't have to leave your house to learn basic facts like this.
>>
>>1317330
I'm fairly certain that boxing wasn't that popular in the past, since people needed their hands to do work and injuries couldn't be nearly treated as well. In general, people preferred wrestling over boxing.
>>
>>1318151
Rugby players can only tackle the guy with the ball, not just anyone who get's in the way. Which makes for less tackles in total.
They are 'lighter' because they actually have to run.

>being so uneducated about a sport that you discredit any argument you attempted to make
Regardless, I'll fix everything wrong with your post because it's fun to make fun of europoors/auscucks.

You can only tackle the player with the ball in football. You can BLOCK any player on the field so long as you are not holding them. There is a huge distinction here.

Rugby players are lighter because you don't block nor do you have a line of scrimmage so you don't need any extra weight or strength for momentum purposes. Moving the scrum does not take near as much strength as a line of scrimmage does when everyone weighs less than the average CB or Wide Receiver (Somewhere in the ballpark of 200 pounds) who run just as much as rugby players do and they run even faster because they're built for sprinting. Despite this, football players, even the corner backs and ESPECIALLY safeties, hit with the force of a small automobile while rugby players hit on average for less than a third of the force. This isn't even disputable as every study on the subject proves it. You'd also know all of this if you actually played football.

Now can you please fix your shitty attitude about comparing your shitty sport with football? It's an endurance sport vs a test of endurance and physicality. They're similar in a lot of ways, but they're very fucking different.

>inb4 you bring up the professional fucking defensive end who said he never wanted to play rugby again
Cornerbacks and receivers routinely play rugby in the offseason without complaining because the sport is very similar to their position. If you put a fucking rugby player on the line, he'd never want to play football again either because he'd get pancaked every fucking play.

>Average car crash happens at roughly 40gs
>According to a Virginia Tech study, a tackle like Trufant's probably caused Lewis's head to accelerate in his helmet at 30 to 60 g's. VT researchers gather data with the Head Impact Telemetry System, which employs sensors and wireless transmitters in helmets. "We see 100-g impacts all the time," says Stefan Duma, director of the university's Center for Injury Biomechanics, "and several over 150 g's."
http://www.popularmechanics.com/adventure/sports/a2954/4212171/

On average, getting tackled in football is no different than being in a car crash while not wearing a seatbelt.
>>
>>1320576
It's not the face, it's the forehead, and sides of the head.
>>
>>1320931
>On average, getting tackled in football is no different than being in a car crash while not wearing a seatbelt
A little over exaggerated, but not by much. A car crash without a seatbelt is about 12 tons, the average tackle is about 2 tons and helmet to helmet is in the ball park of 8 tons of force. The average rugby tackle is about .2 tons. A rugby tackle is literally a tenth of the force of a football tackle which happens at a force that will easily shatter bone.
