IIRC the main goal of Western powers was to stop the wars whatsoever. Since there was no way ZANU/ZAPLA would have backed down there wasn't much point in prolonging the bloodshed. Rhodesia was bound to fall without large scale military aid (probably even with it eventually), but really, you can't expect any Western power to just roll in there and get bogged down in some dumb Africa-wide conflict for years if not decades. Not for a small and relatively irrelevant country like Rhodesia.

The UK expressed moral support for the solution of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, but saw that there was no point in officially helping it as it was a lost cause.
