>Bismarck is the main fucking figure of the painting.

Those uniforms are boss though.
>>
>>1310874
That is because that specific painting was made for Bismarck's birthday or something. In reality Bismarck wore Prussian Blue like everyone else, and I think he wasn't even on the front row.

>Wear bright red trousers in a muddy brown battlefield
>French soldiers get shot to shit, generals realise the disproportionate numbers of casualties resulting from a lack of camoflage
>French generals attempt to redesign the uniforms to fit the requirements of Western Front battlefields
>Get accused by the press of wanting to dress the troops in "Muddy, unglorious colours"
>"La pantalon rouge c'est la France"
> Uniform stays the same, France ends up with one of the highest casualty rates per head out of any nation involved in the conflict

I will admit the colour scheme is nice but it was supremely impractical and arguably lead to thousands of unnecessary casualties
>>
>>1311822
What? The design changed during the war, the red got discarded
>>
>>1312576
Not him, but it got changed as late as 1915. Suggestions to change it were shot down as early as 1912. If the French military command didn't go full retard (as it periodically seems to do in history), the battle of the forntiers would've gone very differently, and might even have ended with trench warfare along the Rhine rather than the Marne.
>>
>>1312576
Instead they made it full blue
Gotta admit that when the sky was clear, it could provide a great camouflage for the one second or so during which they jumped into an enemy trench
>>

>Gotta admit that when the sky was clear, it could provide a great camouflage for the one second or so during which they jumped into an enemy trench
Or, you know... from a distance on relatively flat terrain when poking out over the trenches? Relatively flat terrain that was common on the Western Front?

At least the north had consistent uniforms.

Neither of them are wearing tall boots. They're both wearing marching shoes but with leggings, it's just one of them has leather leggings that were available for officers to buy so it looks a bit like he's wearing tall boots.

generally no, they did much worse. without advantage in numbers and industry they'd have been unable to win. and I say that acknowledging the rebels had the bad cause.

Both, the pads were for warmth but also provided protection against glancing blows. The second effect was a side effect though, not the main purpose.

Barding lived for many years, but gunpowder pretty much ended armor for horses even faster than it did for infantry

They're galoshes. The U.S. used them until after WWII.

>galoshes
You're not even trying anymore.
>>
>>1333672
You have to realize that what are known as galoshes now are not what galoshes were to Americans then. What you call galoshes now were known as gumshoes then. The coverings for the upper part of a boot were known as galoshes in the U.S. until after WWII. They're called leggings today, but they weren't back then.

No, those are leggings (canvas type and leather).

Putees were a long cloth bandage that was wound round the lower leg. Dating from mid-19th century (the British picked up the practice in dusty India), they were mostly superceded by the 1930s by canvas web anklets (sometimes erroneously called puttees, even by British soldiers).

Now, the pagri on the other hand...

Found this when looking for anklet video. 93 year-old Grenadier Guards vet talks about the P37 Web equipment.

He served in the 8th Army in North Africa. Neat old fellow, very well spoken.
