The Samurai haven't called their troops, no one is in uniform, the movie clearly can't decide if it is about the boshin war or the satsuma rebellion, the only historical figure they got right was Saigo except he's out of uniform and doesn't seem to know shit about modern warfare even though he was one of japan's best modern officers at the time

Well I thought it was always obvious it was supposed to be a fictional story about a fictional daimiyo and his fictional clan. Ken Watanabe's character which I assume you mean when you say Saigo probably wasn't in a modern uniform to accentuate the fact that he's of the old ways, in the same way they chose not to give the samurai any guns. It becomes more distinct that way, which is why I'm fine with it.
Has anyone seen When the last sword is drawn? Thought that was a pretty good movie set in the same era.
